Happy Pizza Review: Golden Boy

Happy Pizza Review: Golden Boy

Whenever there is a discussion about pizza slices in San Francisco there is immediately someone singing the praises of the Golden Boy Pizza. Early on I eyed Golden Boy, but they do Sicilian style (thick squares) not true Brooklyn/New Haven style slices, and I only review Brooklyn style slices. But I ended up in an exchange about San Francisco pizza slices on Threads the other night and people were dropping Golden Boy left and right, so I decided I’d go check them out today on my city walk.

In doing this review tonight I’m breaking all of the rules, a personal rule, I don’t stand in line for food, broke that today.

Really just bad timing on my part, the woman behind was the only person behind me and only stood there for five minutes.

Second rule I’ve mentioned, I don’t do Sicilian Style reviews but here I am and here are the slices.

I will say this, in terms of reviews, pizza for me means Brooklyn style. And like deep dish in Chicago, Sicilian Style when it’s good, can be really good food, it’s just not pizza for my purposes. Golden Boy Pizza makes really good food. The crust was well cooked, crunchy on the edges, crispy bottom on some. The cheese is excellent, good quality mozzarella and the sauce is absolutely on point. I wasn’t impressed with the pepperoni they’re using but the sausage was absolutely delicious.

I absolutely get the buzz around Golden Boy Pizza. It’s good food, it’s really reasonably priced, for a slice to be around $4, for the amount of food a single slice is, is a really good deal. A can of Coke was a $1.50, that’s really affordable and fair for what you’re getting. The slices were tasty and filling, the staff was pleasant and it’s a block from Washington Square Park in North Beach where I went to enjoy my slices. So yes, it’s not real pizza, but it’s damn good food and Golden Boy deserves all the love it gets from San Francisco.
