34 Days of Happiness, Day 22 – Deng Ming-Dao on Happiness

34 Days of Happiness – Day 22, Deng Ming-Dao on Balance

happiness

The holidays are often a very stressful period for people so for the next 34 days (Thanksgiving through Christmas) we’re going to do a post a day, something happy and uplifting each day, perhaps an image, a poem, a quote, a moment of happiness or some bit of wisdom all in an effort to boost everyone’s happiness a little bit.  You can do your part by paying it forward, send these little bits of happiness on to others and ask that they do the same and as always, have a happy day my friends ~ Rev Kane

Balance is a concept we will come back to time and time again on this blog. Even in attaining happiness, everything has to be done in it’s measure, all aspects of your life must be balanced. This is something we all understand intellectually but often fail to achieve in our life. Of course I’m being a little hypocritical as I’m writing this after coming home from working an eleven hour day. So I return to my reading for the day, and share my daily meditation with you courtesy of Deng Ming-Dao.

Balance

Summer withered grass to flaxen yellow,
Scorched leaves to brittle paper,
Dried lakes to cracked clay.

Chill autumn brought little relief-
But with the early gentle rains,
The earth’s fissure softened
And desiccated plans began to dissolve.
Slowly, balance comes once again.

Many cultures describe old people as having seen many winters. These elders have seen many cycles come and go, and their wisdom comes from long observation of life’s rising and falling. If we have a long-range view, then we realize that equilibrium comes in the course of nature’s progression. Nature does not achieve balance by keeping to one level. Rather, elements and seasons alternate with one another in succession. Balance, as defined by Tao, is not stasis but a dynamic process of many overlapping alternations; even if some phases seem wildly excessive, they are balanced by others.

Everything has its place. Everything has its season. As events turn, balance is to know what is here, what is coming and how to be in perfect harmony with it. Then one attains a state of sublimity that cannot be challenged.

34 Days of Happiness – Day 19, Pablo Neruda

34 Days of Happiness – Day 19, Pablo Neruda

happiness, poetry, neruda

The holidays are often a very stressful period for people so for the next 34 days (Thanksgiving through Christmas) we’re going to do a post a day, something happy and uplifting each day, perhaps an image, a poem, a quote, a moment of happiness or some bit of wisdom all in an effort to boost everyone’s happiness a little bit.  You can do your part by paying it forward, send these little bits of happiness on to others and ask that they do the same and as always, have a happy day my friends ~ Rev Kane

Today another piece of poetry on happiness, a piece by Pablo Neruda that I really love.  One of the things that brings me happiness is good poetry and Pablo Neruda is a master, he paints amazing images with his words, enjoy.

Die Slowly – Pablo Neruda

He who becomes the slave of habit,
who follows the same routes every day,
who never changes pace,
who does not risk and change the color of his clothes,
who does not speak and does not experience,
dies slowly.

He or she who shuns passion,
who prefers black on white,
dotting ones i’s rather than a bundle of emotions, the kind that make your eyes glimmer,
that turn a yawn into a smile,
that make the heart pound in the face of mistakes and feelings,
dies slowly.

He or she who does not turn things topsy-turvy,
who is unhappy at work,
who does not risk certainty for uncertainty,
to thus follow a dream,
those who do not forego sound advice at least once in their lives,
die slowly.

He who does not travel, who does not read,
who does not listen to music,
who does not find grace in himself,
she who does not find grace in herself,
dies slowly.

He who slowly destroys his own self-esteem,
who does not allow himself to be helped,
who spends days on end complaining about his own bad luck, about the rain that never stops,
dies slowly.

He or she who abandons a project before starting it, who fails to ask questions on subjects he doesn’t know, he or she who doesn’t reply when they are asked something they do know,
dies slowly.

Let’s try and avoid death in small doses,
reminding oneself that being alive requires an effort far greater than the simple fact of breathing.

Only a burning patience will lead
to the attainment of a splendid happiness.

34 Days of Happiness – Day 15, Deng Ming-Dao on Innocence

34 Days of Happiness – Day 15, Deng Ming-Dao on Innocence

As I’ve mentioned in a previous post I read from a book each day, Deng Ming-Dao’s 365 Tao: Daily Meditations. I have always liked today’s entry so I thought I would share, as I’ve mentioned each day starts with a poem and then thoughts on the poem.

Black and Orange butterfly –
Flying joyously
Wings like a nuns hands:
First folded in prayer
Then open in offering.

The world moves toward war. Leaders increase their rhetoric. Armies mass along the border. The world, it seems, never tires of conflict.

We should remember the innocent in life. The delicate, the gossamer, the beautiful. A butterfly lives for a day. It comes into the world with very little reason except to fly and mate. It does not question its destiny. It does not engage in any alchemy to extend its lifespan or to change its lot. It goes about its brief life happily.

A butterfly is always attracted to the beautiful. Whether it is the sun on a blade of grass or the edge of a deep ruby rose, the butterfly spends its brief time dwelling on loveliness.

Even the angry and insane leave the butterfly alone. Why can we not learn to honor the innocence in one another? Maybe we spend too much time dwelling on the ugly. In the name of practicality and realism, we think about strategy, defense, territory, gain, and advantage. We are too late to be like the butterfly. But at least we can honor it, and move as closely as possible to its simple existence.

happiness compassion

There are two kinds of happiness – the temporary pleasure derived primarily from material comfort alone and another more enduring comfort that results from the thorough transformation and development of the mind. We can see in our own lives that the latter form of happiness is superior because when our mental state is calm and happy, we can easily put up with minor pains and physical discomforts. On the other hand, when our mind is restless and upset, the most comfortable physical facilities do not make us happy. ~ Dalai Lama
