What is the most beautiful thing I encountered today?

Even after thirty years of living in California, having grown up on the Northeast, it always surprises me how early flowers bloom. Today on my walk there were flowers everywhere, yellow flowers on lawns, bushes bursting in purple, it was gorgeous.

What did I learn today?

That the Milky Way smells of raspberries and run. A probe several years ago detected the chemicals in a cloud of gas in the Milky Way that are the chemicals responsible for the smells of raspberries and rum. An aspect of a science fiction story I read once that took me by surprise was two astronauts landing on an alien planet remarking on how terrible the planet smelled and then discussing the different smells of different planets. A really interesting aspect that we don’t think about.

What made me happy today?

After a couple of weeks of having to be up early every day I’m exhausted. So today I got to sleep in, it made me incredibly happy.

When we think of classic American desserts, we tend to imagine apple pie and ice cream. However, the most classic American dessert of all might be the chocolate chip cookie. ~ Homaro Cantu

What was the most beautiful thing I encountered today?

I know it’s a bit repetetive but another rainy day finally broke this afternoon and the sun came out of beautiful blue skies with fluffy white clouds.

What did I learn today?

One of my favorite candies, Smarties are actually made with repurposed gunpowder pellet machines that were surplussed after WWII

What made me happy today?

I remembered someone had gifted me some chocolate chip cookie dough, so what made me happy today was celebrating my first day of vacation with some fresh baked cookies.

What was the most beautiful thing I encountered today?

It was my parking spot, empty when I returned home from work late. I’ve been in a battle over the spot, a neighbor has insisted in parking there and I thought for sure I’d be walking in the rain tonight, that empty spot was a beautiful sight.

What did I learn today?

The spy satellite Corona in 1960 shot 3000 feet of film of the Soviet Union, in order to get the film back to the US government, it tossed the film canister from space in a capsule. The capsule had a heat shield, a chute popped out and then a plane caught it with a fork on the front of the plane. Pretty amazing.

What made me happy today?

Today I finished three probationary employee reviews and happily all of them are doing great and are now permanent employees.

What was the most beautiful thing I encountered today?

After several days of rain, the most beautiful thing I saw today were bright blue skies on a sunny day.

What did I learn today?

I ordered some girl scout cookies, Samoas, when I got them they weren’t called Samoas, they were called Caramel Delights. I wondered if they changed the name so I looked it up. Turns out there are several different baking companies that make the cookies. Only one of them has the trademark for the name Samoas, so the cookies on the west coast don’t come from the bakery with the trademark, sooooo Caramel Delights. Just a little different, not dark chocolate, milk chocolate and a little less coconut. Still tasty as hell.

What made me happy today?

Again connected to the rain, since it wasn’t raining today I got to walk outside today. Even though it was a brisk forty degrees out, made me happy to be walking outside.

polar bear

For humans, the Arctic is a harshly inhospitable place, but the conditions there are precisely what polar bears require to survive – and thrive. ‘Harsh’ to us is ‘home’ for them. Take away the ice and snow, increase the temperature by even a little, and the realm that makes their lives possible literally melts away. ~ Sylvia Earle

What was the most beautiful thing I saw today?

After a conversation and a little nostalgia today I was thinking about the time I went to Manitoba to photograph polar bears, so I took a look at my photos from that trip.

What did I learn today?

That an African-American Garret Morgan invented the three light traffic light. His addition of the yellow, warning light, significantly increased traffic safety, very cool

What made me happy today?

Last week we had an employee have a medical emergency, today I found out she is doing well.

What was the most beautiful thing I encountered today?

This morning on my walk there was a pretty pink flower with little water drops sitting on the petals.

What did I learn today?

Today I learned about the origins of Cupid, I think I knew this at one point, but I was reminded that Cupid was from Roman/Greek mythology and supposedly the son of Eros and Aphrodite. He also had his own myth with Psyche. He was popularized by Victorian society into what we know today.

What made me happy today?

A short conversation with my sister and eldest niece is what made me happy today.

What was the most beautiful thing I encountered today?

It’s been a cold, gray rainy day, so that’s meant writing, cooking and entertainment. The most beautiful thing I heard today was a Lore podcast episode on time slips, a concept that has always fascinated me.

What did I learn today?

Due to a conversation I was having I ended up Googling and learning that the actor Jack Nicholson was an only child. But he didn’t know that, his mom had him at 17 and he thought his aunt raised him and his sister. In fact, it was his mom and grandmother.

What made me happy today?

A couple of days ago one of my oldest friends had his birthday. We usually chat around his birthday and so today we talked for over two and a half hours. I’ve known him for over 50 years and he’s someone who is highly intelligent and like me also really enjoys TV and movies. So we talked about life and family and then dove deep into movies and television, it was a great conversation and absolutely one of my happiest things is a good conversation.

Where’s the Line?

Red is such an interesting color to correlate with emotion, because it’s on both ends of the spectrum. On one end you have happiness, falling in love, infatuation with someone, passion, all that. On the other end, you’ve got obsession, jealousy, danger, fear, anger and frustration. ~ Taylor Swift

Where’s the Line?

I’ve been in a bad place for a while now. Humanity has me down and honestly I feel like I’m under some kind of voodoo curse. Literally, every day for the last three weeks, every day something seems to go fairly seriously wrong. And of course, once that starts happening you start to expect it, look for it, and without your normal emotional reserves you’re pushed to anger and frustration far too easily. It is not a place of happiness. I do what I know I need to do to keep my balance, to keep from descending into the well of depression but right now it’s not easy. So it’s through this current lens that I’m viewing the world. A world that seems to be moving in a direction of selfishness, entitlement and more and more toward nonacceptance of difference. All of this honestly tears my soul to pieces.

So the question I’ve been asking myself lately is where is the line? I struggle with this line, and so as not to continue to be mysterious in any way, the line I’m talking about is the line between civility and violence. In our world the ever increasing entitlement and selfishness exhibited by others is constantly putting you into the position of making a choice. Roll over and be taken advantage of and disrespected, or enter into confrontation. No one likes confrontation, we all know that knot in our stomach when there’s conflict, and no civil person enjoys it. So most of the time, most of us choose not to say anything or do anything, just let the little indignities go. But by doing that, we are teaching the selfish, the entitled, the bullies in this world that there behavior is okay, it will get them what they want, that they truly are entitled to always put their needs above others. They are always entitled to be first, to cut in line, to treat people disrespectfully while being immediately angry and offended if they receive any push back or similar treatment to them.

So where’s the line? When is it time to push back on the disrespect? When do we stand up for ourselves and teach the selfish that others are just as important as they believe they are? And where is the line in terms of how hard to push back?

I struggle with that last question most of all. Because honestly I push back a lot, I’m the asshole who speaks up when someone cuts the line or is disrespectful to someone around me, particularly if they are someone who is vulnerable. It leads to more confrontation than I want in my life, but I don’t believe people should should just be free to roll over others because they are bigger or bolder. But I’m tired, I honestly feel like Sisyphus right now, like I’m trying to bail out a boat with a teaspoon. And it leads me to Falling Down fantasies. If you’ve seen that movie you know what I’m talking about. For those who don’t, the character played by Michael Douglas reaches the end of his rope. Now, I don’t identify with the specific character, he’s a horrible person who is angry at society for all of the wrong reasons. But it’s the emotion I identify with, the breaking point of not being able to try or care anymore. Feeling like the whole world is taking and never giving and his character snaps. He becomes a maniac, the type of person that if you bump into him he beats you down with a bat, he becomes that taker. It of course all ends horribly for him, the lesson is clear, this is not the way.

So what do we do? This is a bigger question than just me an you. This is a question for our society as well. How do we build a society where it becomes wrong for people to take advantage of people who are less than they are in some way? Should civilization be civil, shouldn’t the purpose of society be to develop community in such a way that it protects, defends and supports the most vulnerable? Those that don’t fit the typical societal molds should be protected and supported not othered, diminished and ostracized. I say this as someone who has never fit, someone with the perfect camouflage, I’m a white male in America. But someone who none the less has never fit, and likely because of that has always been drawn to others who don’t fit as well. My camouflage and acting ability allows me to pass far more easily than others, but that doesn’t mean I feel like I fit in anymore than others without the costume. And even simpler so, shouldn’t civilization be something that promotes all of us being civil to each other?

So this is what really has eaten into and frankly devoured my happiness lately. So what do you do when you find yourself where I am ? Frankly, in my life there are two things that I can do. The first is withdraw, as a huge introvert the only way I can deal is by limiting my time and level of interaction with people. So I’m taking a week off soon, retreating to the desert, to a spa and some hot springs to hide away from the world. Secondly, and this might sound like an odd answer to my question, but I ramp up my kindness. I find as many small ways as possible every day to be kind to others. It means letting people into traffic more than normal, holding doors even if someone isn’t quite close enough to the door, buying a student lunch if they are behind me in line. Those small acts of kindness serve two purposes. First these acts spread a little more civility and kindness in the world, a way to push back and answer my question in a small way. Second, doing them selfishly also makes me feel better.

By doing what I’m doing, I’m certainly not winning in this world right now and if I was to be completely honest, which I try to be with those of you reading this blog, I’m absolutely fucking miserable right now. But I’m working at it, I’m trying and honestly that’s the best any of us can ever do.

So the lesson tonight friends, be grateful and thankful for what you’ve got. Give grace to others because you don’t know what they are going through, no matter what mask they are wearing or how they appear. And do your best to have a happy day my friends. ~ Rev Kane

What was the most beautiful thing I encountered today?

I was standing in line in the grocery store, I was third in line. The first person was being rung up and the cashier asked for a penny. The man’s English wasn’t very good, and he was confused, finally he pulled out some change but had no penny. The old man who was second in line reached up and offered him the penny. The first man seemed quite surprised and then quite grateful and happy. It was just really beautiful to see some simple kindness in a world where it is seriously lacking right now.

What did I learn today?

An interesting fact, although we call it the red planet, the sunsets on Mars are blue.

What made me happy today?

Man it’s been a week, what made me happy today was just really having a down and nothing day.

What was the most beautiful thing I encountered today?

The most beautiful thing I encountered today were the images of the hot springs I’m heading to in a little over a week.

What did I learn today?

Given the small range of audio and visual light spectrum that we can hear and see, to humans, the majority of the physical world is actually inaudible and invisible to us.

What made me happy today?

What made me happy today was booking my next vacation, a few days at a hot springs spa in Palm Springs.
