Random Happiness: Live Animal Cams

Green is the prime color of the world, and that from which its loveliness arises ~ Pedro Calderon de la Barca

We’ve talked before about the importance of nature and the benefits of spending time out in nature away from society’s craziness and noise.  It would be ideal if every day we could take some time out to walk in nature and recalibrate ourselves.  Unfortunately for many of us we live and work in places where that’s not possible.  So today I thought I would post some links to some live animal cams, perhaps a way to get a little nature time without even leaving your desk.  So take a gander and a happy day my friends ~ Rev Kane

Animal Planet has a number of cams available on their site and their HD cams so the images are great.

First a site from the Smithsonian National Zoo that gives you a number of animal cams you can look at including otters, leopards, lions and pandas.

You have to register for National Geographic wild cam to get access, but it is free and pretty cool.

A great collection of wild animal cams in nature

I think these are all recorded but some great footage of wild animals

Random Happiness: Nature Sounds

Random Happiness: Nature Sounds

Unaka enhancedGreat things are done when men and mountains meet. This is not done by jostling in the street. ~ William Blake

So today in my tour around the web I encountered and interesting story on NPR about rare earth sounds including such things as tuba sounds made by sand dunes.  I’ve always been fascinated by sound in nature whether it be the boiling cobblestone beaches or the cacophony of sounds at night in the Amazonian Rainforests in Brazil or even the natural quiet you can find deep in the forest.  Tonight a few links, some happy audio to help you have a happy day my friends ~ Rev Kane

Happiness is Laughter: Laughing Babies

Happiness is Laughter: Laughing Babies

The human race has one really effective weapon, and that is laughter.            ~ Mark Twain

005

I read a disturbing statistic the other day in a Psychology Today piece, it said that a four-year-old laughs 300 times per day and a forty-year-old only four times a day.  That number seems insane, until you spend some time around a four-year-old.  Then the whole things switches for me, why do we laugh so little as adults?  We need to laugh more, laughing makes us happy and in fact may even make us healthier.

So my friends we need to laugh more and to try to help you out with that here are a few videos that hopefully will bring some smiles, laughs and help you have a happier day my friends ~ Rev Kane

The first laughing baby, laughing at ripped paper.

Next my favorite laughing baby video.

Finally, a quadruplet crack up of laughing babies, too funny:

Happiness Resources: A Deeper Look

Happiness Resources: A Deeper Look

All that we are is the result of what we have thought. If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him. If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him. ~ The Buddha

deep

Tonight in touring around the web I decided to look for more in depth and scholarly pieces, so tonight resources for those of you who want to take a little deeper dive into the idea of how to have happier days my friends ~ Rev Kane

First a great piece from the NY Times, A Formula for Happiness

A foundational piece in the field of happiness by the Economist to explain to you why you’re so miserable as a teenager or why you’re getting happier in middle-age.  The U-Bend

A much better than normal piece from the Huffington Post, The Habits of Supremely Happy People

A very interesting piece from the Atlantic, How to Hardwire Your Brain for Happiness

Hello my friends, I often do tours across the web for you and today I thought I would provide you with several of my go to sites for resources on how to have a happier day ~ Rev Kane

Zen Habits – From my perspective the best site on the web if you are looking for information on how to live a better, healthier and happier life.

The Tiny Buddha – The Tiny Buddha is awesome, like them on Facebook because their Facebook page consistently puts out great articles on your page.

Mind, Body, Green – Very much like the Tiny Buddha, Mind – Body – Green puts out really great stuff on a consistent basis.

The Happiness Project – this is Gretchen Rubin’s site based on the book of the same name, consistently good information on happiness and living better.

Happiness is a Good Bottle of Wine

Happiness is a Good Bottle of Wine

Wine is bottled poetry ~ Robert Louis Stevenson

wine

Wine is a funny sort of beverage, we treat it differently than almost any other beverage.  What other beverage has rating scores posted at the store, has to breathe and has to be swirled and tasted before we drink it?  What other beverage is so tightly tied to celebrations and holidays, to romance?  So today I thought I’d put together a post about having a good bottle of wine, what makes it good, how to pick one and even how to make the wine you picked even better.  So sit back, pop a cork, pour a glass and have a happy day my friends ~ Rev Kane

How to pick a bottle of wine

Ten ways to find a good supermarket wine

Better wine through Chemistry

Best wines to reduce a hangover

Finally a great piece from NPR’s Science Friday on wine psychology or plainly how to make a bottle of wine taste even better.

Be Happy, Lose the Winter Blues

Be Happy, Lose the Winter Blues

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Never cut down a tree in the wintertime. Never make a negative decision in the low time. Never make your most important decisions when you are in your worst moods. Wait. Be patient. The storm will pass. The spring will come ~ Robert H Shuller

A repost from last winter, but seems especially relevant given I’ve spent the last 6 weeks in the worst winter NY has had in some time ~ Rev Kane

The fact that I’m writing this post from Northern California in an abnormally sunny and dry winter might seem a little strange.  However, one of the reasons I live in Northern California is because growing up I got quite tired of long hard winters.  People who never grew up in snowy and cold winter regions are always confused by this; snow is so pretty they always say.  Without a doubt I agree with them, one of my favorite things is to be out in the woods after it has been snowing for a while.  There is nothing as peaceful and serene as a forest painted white with snow with big fluffy flakes falling to the ground.  It’s like a big white blanket that dulls sound and makes it feel like the world is all your own.

However, there is the shoveling and the tracking of snow into the house, horrible driving conditions, not being able to get out to do what you want and of course the cold.  Particularly this year as people learned a new term, Polar Vortex, they were reminded that the cold can be truly brutal.  Not to be left out the truly dangerous part of winter is the ice that you crash your car on, that you slip and fall on and that hangs from your roof like winter’s own fangs.

So in a tough winter monotony sets in and very often our mood drops with it.  This isn’t only a problem for people in the snow and cold regions, folks in the Pacific Northwest deal with the same issues in the grey and rainy winters they face each year.  They even have a condition named for this issue, Seasonal Affective Disorder, SAD which I think at some level is the most obnoxiously named condition ever, I mean really, it’s not enough that you’re depressed without being labeled as having SAD.  So many of us flee south to warm waves and beaches but for those of you unable I thought I’d pull up a few resources for you to try to shake of the winter monotony and have a happy winter’s day ~ Rev Kane

A nice piece from the field of psychology on how to battle Seasonal Affective Disorder

From Web MD, actual symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder

Happiness is Super Bowl Sunday

Happiness is Super Bowl Sunday

The truth is the Super Bowl long ago became more than just a football game. It’s part of our culture like turkey at Thanksgiving and lights at Christmas, and like those holidays beyond their meaning, a factor in our economy. ~ Bob Schieffer

puppy

So today is Super Bowl Sunday!  Another unofficial American holiday, another reason to have a get together and have some fun.  For those of you who are Seahawk or Bronco fans I wish you good luck and a quiet place to watch the game while you cheer on your team.  Nothing much more frustrating than trying to cheer on your team at a Super Bowl party as most people at these parties are typically more interested in the commercials and the snacks than they are the game.  If you have have no dog in today’s fight, have a great time at the parties and may you find a wonderful bounty of snacks and drinks and companionship.

Of course the commercials are certainly a highlight and the one that I’ve become enamored with even prior to its airing is the Muppet Commercial.  Nothing like a bunch of Muppets committing a felony set to music to celebrate the big game!

Of course Super Bowl Sunday has also proliferated a whole collection of alternate events meant to entertain us, this year a big one is the Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet.  Who wouldn’t love adorable little puppies running around and playing, so if football is not your bag enjoy. Not to be outdone there is also the Kitten Bowl, the Fish Bowl and a cute little bit of advertising by AMC running a Walking Dead marathon, the Zombie Bowl.

So whatever your bowl of choice, or whether you are smartly running errands or hiking during the game to avoid the normal crowds, enjoy your Super Bowl Sunday and have a happy day my friends ~ Rev Kane
