Happy Holidays: 2020 Silver Linings

Happy Holidays: 2020 Silver Linings

I would do my damn best to be more happy than not. You’ve already experienced so much bullshit so you can always look back on how things could be worse. That’s my two cents. ~ Adam Silvera

There are only two Sunday nights, so two new Ministry of Happiness weekly posts left for the year.  While most people would likely pick this post to talk about the wonders of Christmas, and the last to review the year, I think you all know by now I don’t do things like other people do.   The simple thing is I don’t like Christmas, it’s never been a happy holiday for me.  I make the most of it, find my joy in being a good gift giver, particular for the children in my life, my little nieces and nephews.  But given that I live quite far from them, those gifts have long since been bought, wrapped and shipped.

Heck some of them have already been snooped.  One of my nieces partially unwrapped her gifts to figure out what they are, and so her parents wouldn’t know she did it, she re-wrapped them.  Of course, I used clear scotch tape, she used duct tape to re-seal them which is what got her busted. The whole incident gave me a pretty good chuckle.  So really for me, Christmas will just be another Friday, albeit with a nicer meal than normal.  This year planning on a little surf and turf, T-bone steak and a baked shrimp dish, all the fixins and some homemade desert.  A check-in with the little ones as well,  although they are always completely overwhelmed on Christmas morning so it’s usually brief.

So tonight, I want to review the year a bit, particularly with a positive lens.  It’s been a hard year in so many ways for so many people, I think it’s important that we all find some time to reflect on the silver linings for 2020.

Silver Linings for 2020

First and foremost it’s important, in a year where so many people became sick and died, when so many people lost jobs and business that I give thanks for where I am in life.  At this point in my life, after a lot of hard work, I’m privileged to be in a place that when the pandemic erupted my job was secure.  I live alone, so working from home was not a burden, in fact as a pretty heavy introvert, in some ways it’s been pleasurable not to have to be face to face interacting with people all day.  Also living alone, it’s meant that I was only responsible for keeping myself from getting sick.  So it was all on me and so far, so good I have been fortunate enough as far as I know, to not have been infected with COVID.

On the health front other things have gone well this year as well.  Not having access to a gym pushed me to buy a bench, some hand weights and to take up running.  I’m actually lifting weights more regularly than I have ever done before.  I’m also running several days a week and recently, for the first time in my life, ran over two miles.  This has helped  be keep my weight consistently around 190 pounds.  Over the last couple of years I’ve stayed under 200 pounds for the first time, typically around 195 and now, I’ve moved that to 190 pushing toward my eventual goal of 175.  My blood pressure has stayed consistent and my heart conditions have made no negative progressions.  I’m still struggling with my blood sugar, but I stress eat and it’s been a stressful year, but I’m working on it.

At work, our new realities put me under a lot of pressure but also gave me an opportunity to highlight my abilities.  I do well under stress, and the stress of the last few months have allowed me to create and collaborate on new policies and for my area to be the test subject through several new district processes.  Handling those things well has given me the opportunity to show my abilities to folks working at the district office level, something that likely wouldn’t have happened for some time without COVID.

In all stressful times we learn a lot about the people we interact with.  I’ll be writing a post later this week about how our COVID times have revealed people’s values.  The extra pressure of the last nine months has done a lot to reveal people.  Partially as a result, I’ve significantly reduced my social media presence, had my opinions of some people really changed and mostly just wanted to turn down the noise in my life.  I find myself focusing more and more on the people who are real in my life.  The people I physically see and talk to off of social media.  I’m trying to focus on the quality of my relationships while reducing the quantity of my relationships.  This has also meant letting go of some people I’ve hung on to for some time.  It’s not easy for me, if you meant something to me at some time, my nature is to hang on to you, work at keeping connection, even if it’s somewhat or even really one-sided.  This year has allowed me to make the move to letting go, and focusing down to the quality connections in my life.

So 2020 has certainly had it’s challenges, but I think for all of us right now, it’s important to realize it also gave us all gifts, brought us all some kind of happiness.  Especially during the holidays, as the year wraps up, focusing on and staying positive is really important as the holidays are often the most stressful part of the year.  So happy holidays my friends, whatever or however you celebrate, may you find joy and peace as we end one year and move on to the next.  Have a happy day ~ Rev Kane

Holiday Happiness: Holiday Mood Improvement Resources

Holiday Happiness: Holiday Mood Improvement Resources

Normality is a paved road; It’s comfortable to walk, but no flowers grow. ~ Vincent Van Gogh

Each year during the holidays I try and provide some additional posts about happiness to help keep people’s moods positive during the holidays.  I do this, because for many people like myself, the holidays are often the hardest times of the year. ~ Rev Kane

So tonight I thought I would provide some resources for thinking about and improving your mood during the holiday season.  First off a really nice article from WebMD on Holiday Blues, and some tips on how to deal with them.

Similarly a piece from the Mayo Clinic, some information about causes, reasons and tips for helping you cope.

9 Tips on dealing with Holiday Depression

Finally as some one who has dealt with this issue much of his life I have some personal tips as well.  First of all, acknowledge the reality of who you are and how you feel.  You don’t have to put yourself into situations that make you feel bad.  It’s ok to skip the office or even family holiday party if all it’s going to do is make you feel shitty.   If holiday decorations are just a reminder of what you don’t have in your life, don’t decorate, or even better decorate in some offbeat and fun way.

For me, as much as I don’t like the holidays, I like gift giving.  So I start early and take extra time to buy really good gifts for people.  It gives me joy and improves my mood to give those gifts and see the joy I bring to others.  I’ve also written about the benefits of giving and kindness and their positive impact on mood.

Also, find some time to get outside to go for walks, to hike, to just spend some time in nature and clear your head.  Essentially, if this time of year is hard for you, do things that make you feel better, make them a priority, and give yourself permission to avoid the things that make you feel worse and have happier days my friends. ~ Rev Kane

My COVID Times Diary: Hope and Death

My COVID Times Diary: Hope and Death

We have always held to the hope, the belief, the conviction that there is a better life, a better world, beyond the horizon. ~ Franklin D. Roosevelt

Pale death beats equally at the poor man’s gate and at the palaces of kings. ~ Horace

We’re nine months into the pandemic in the United States.  I know there is no official start date, but for me it will always be March 12th, the day we closed the college I work at in the Bay Area of California.  There has been an ebb and flow to the whole thing here in California.  When the virus hit we went into a pretty extreme lockdown, it hurt businesses but it worked.  The Bay Area lagged behind the state and many other urban areas in America in terms of infections and death.  The mantra in the beginning was flatten the curve, in other words, be careful and stretch out the infections so that our hospitals wouldn’t get overwhelmed, thus saving lives.  It worked, the curve flattened and the Bay Area did well, that was phase I.

Phase II was us letting our guards down, we re-opened business, salons, bars and people dropped their guards.  The inevitable result was that over the summer, particularly around the holidays cases began to spike again.  In California like many other places around the country we started this game of tiers, stages, color coded alert levels.  Governments tried to tie the level of open business to the level of infection in the community, most places.  But Americans are a stubborn bunch and places like the Dakotas, who were relatively unscathed in the early going ignored the precautions.  Hell, they even held the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally with thousands upon thousands of people gathering from around the country.  The results were inevitable and cases exploded in the Dakotas to some of the worst rates of infection in the country, likely in the world.

After the silliness of people gathering all summer for barbecues and parties, ignoring mask wearing and social distancing protocols, rates first spiked and then started to drop again as the fall approached.  But then came phase III – the holidays, Halloween, four weeks later Thanksgiving and four weeks after that, two weeks from now will be Christmas and New Years.  Public health officials warned us that if we gathered there would be a spike, there would be deaths.  But we didn’t listen, we went to Halloween parties and trick or treated.  How do I know?  Well my social media feeds were full of pictures of people, maskless, at parties, gathering with friends.  So cases rose accordingly.  Then we gathered for Thanksgiving, went to sporting events etc… and we got a spike on the spike.  Currently, 3000 people are dying every day, that’s two people every minute, every day. You would think this would scare people into changing their behavior but it won’t.  How do I know?  People have been reaching out to me and many say, “I hope you’ll be with people for Christmas or are you visiting family?”  Since I live alone, and they know this, this means they think it’s perfectly reasonable for the holidays to visit family and friends. So expect a spike, upon a spike, upon a spike.  We’re talking about hundreds of thousands of cases per day, 3000+ deaths daily or more.

Yes, there’s hope on the horizon, but before that hope can be realized we will massacre ourselves in droves and droves like suicidal lemmings going off a cliff.  I’m so incredibly disappointed in my fellow Americans.  So disappointed that people are not willing to inconvenience themselves to ensure the survival of others.  My heart breaks for the people like nurses, doctors, supermarket workers ad others who are risking infection and death daily because they have to, while others so carelessly ignore the reasonable recommendations of public health officials.

There is hope of course, multiple vaccines are approved, or in the approval process.  In fact, here in a America we started vaccinating people, mostly healthcare workers this very week.  It’s not unreasonable to think by the the fall of 2021 that most of us will have the chance to be vaccinated.  But between vaccine hesitancy, and people stopping precautions because they think it’s over, we’re a long way from being past this.  I know everyone is tired of the precautions but it didn’t have to be this way.  We could have masked up, we could have social distanced.  That would have gotten businesses, schools open permanently sooner.  How do I know?  Well, other countries have done just that, but we haven’t.  So we’ve got lots of death and now, with the vaccines, lots of hope. ~ Rev Kane

Happiness is Poetry: Audre Lorde

Happiness is Poetry: Audre Lorde

Tonight the poet I’d like to introduce you to is Audre Lorde.  She was a fierce black woman in life and in her words.  Her words remind me of one of my favorite poets Warsan Shire.  Lorde is more lyrical and not quite as brutal as Shire, but the truth she reveals in her writing in stark.  There always seems to be just out of the range of perception in her work, how it likely should be for a heterosexual white male trying to grasp the work of gay black woman.  A great description of Audre Lorde, followed by her work.

A self-described “black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet,” Audre Lorde dedicated both her life and her creative talent to confronting and addressing injustices of racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia. Lorde was born in New York City to West Indian immigrant parents. She attended Catholic schools before graduating from Hunter High School and published her first poem in Seventeen magazine while still a student there. Of her poetic beginnings Lorde commented in Black Women Writers: “I used to speak in poetry. I would read poems, and I would memorize them. People would say, well what do you think, Audre. What happened to you yesterday? And I would recite a poem and somewhere in that poem would be a line or a feeling I would be sharing. In other words, I literally communicated through poetry. And when I couldn’t find the poems to express the things I was feeling, that’s what started me writing poetry, and that was when I was twelve or thirteen.”

Power

The difference between poetry and rhetoric
is being ready to kill
yourself
instead of your children.
I am trapped on a desert of raw gunshot wounds
and a dead child dragging his shattered black
face off the edge of my sleep
blood from his punctured cheeks and shoulders
is the only liquid for miles
and my stomach
churns at the imagined taste while
my mouth splits into dry lips
without loyalty or reason
thirsting for the wetness of his blood
as it sinks into the whiteness
of the desert where I am lost
without imagery or magic
trying to make power out of hatred and destruction
trying to heal my dying son with kisses
only the sun will bleach his bones quicker.
A policeman who shot down a ten year old in Queens
stood over the boy with his cop shoes in childish blood
and a voice said “Die you little motherfucker” and
there are tapes to prove it. At his trial
this policeman said in his own defense
“I didn’t notice the size nor nothing else
only the color”. And
there are tapes to prove that, too.
Today that 37 year old white man
with 13 years of police forcing
was set free
by eleven white men who said they were satisfied
justice had been done
and one Black Woman who said
“They convinced me” meaning
they had dragged her 4’10” black Woman’s frame
over the hot coals
of four centuries of white male approval
until she let go
the first real power she ever had
and lined her own womb with cement
to make a graveyard for our children.
I have not been able to touch the destruction
within me.
But unless I learn to use
the difference between poetry and rhetoric
my power too will run corrupt as poisonous mold
or lie limp and useless as an unconnected wire
and one day I will take my teenaged plug
and connect it to the nearest socket
raping an 85 year old white woman
who is somebody’s mother
and as I beat her senseless and set a torch to her bed
a greek chorus will be singing in 3/4 time
“Poor thing. She never hurt a soul. What beasts they are.”

I have studied the tight curls on the back of your neck
moving away from me
beyond anger or failure
your face in the evening schools of longing
through mornings of wish and ripen
we were always saying goodbye
in the blood in the bone over coffee
before dashing for elevators going
in opposite directions
without goodbyes.

Do not remember me as a bridge nor a roof
as the maker of legends
nor as a trap
door to that world
where black and white clericals
hang on the edge of beauty in five oclock elevators
twitching their shoulders to avoid other flesh
and now
there is someone to speak for them
moving away from me into tomorrows
morning of wish and ripen
your goodbye is a promise of lightning
in the last angels hand
unwelcome and warning
the sands have run out against us
we were rewarded by journeys
away from each other
into desire
into mornings alone
where excuse and endurance mingle
conceiving decision.
Do not remember me
as disaster
nor as the keeper of secrets
I am a fellow rider in the cattle cars
watching
you move slowly out of my bed
saying we cannot waste time
only ourselves.

There are so many roots to the tree of anger
that sometimes the branches shatter
before they bear.

Sitting in Nedicks
the women rally before they march
discussing the problematic girls
they hire to make them free.
An almost white counterman passes
a waiting brother to serve them first
and the ladies neither notice nor reject
the slighter pleasures of their slavery.
But I who am bound by my mirror
as well as my bed
see causes in colour
as well as sex

and sit here wondering
which me will survive
all these liberations.

Happiness Moments: A Wonderful Surprise

Happiness Moments: A Wonderful Surprise

Surprise is the greatest gift which life can grant us. ~ Boris Pasternak

So a new little writing experiment for the blog. I’ve been wanting to find a way to do some free writing as practice. And I’ve been wanting to capture the moments in my life that have brought me true happiness. I need that little pick me up right now with everything going on in the world and no real chance to travel. So, some writing about happy moments in my life, hope they bring you a little happiness too.

So yesterday I had the day off, it was actually a little bit of a bummer being home because I had planned to be in the Mojave Desert hiking, camping and watching the Geminid Meteor shower.  During the afternoon the phone rang, it was a call from one of my favorite people to talk to.  Ed is the first president  I worked for in California, our conversations are always filled with lots of laughter and the time flies by quickly.  Somehow I always end up with a new project after every call, but that’s a discussion for another time. Ed was one of my early professional mentors and has remained a friend.

I moved to California to take a job at Hartnell College as the Math Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) Director.  While there I’m proud to say we did some great work with that program.  Our students were incredibly hard working, the hardest working students that I have ever worked with.  They made me proud on a daily basis and what they achieved, in addition to transferring to great schools, they earned scholarships, graduated with great degrees and went on to get great jobs.  This is something that not just impacted them but their entire families.

Our president made it very clear to the management staff that he had a desire, he wanted to win the Bellwether Award.  According to their site, the nationally recognized Bellwether Award focuses on cutting-edge, trendsetting programs worthy of replication.  Ed wanted this award badly, so we decided to chase it.  Our biggest hope was that we might become a finalist for the award.  I was especially hoping for this  because finalists went to Orlando to present at a week long conference and I was madly in love and involved with a woman who was living in Orlando.  However, when we started looking at the submissions from other schools we realized we were likely outclassed.  But we put our packets together, cranked up a CD with some data, photos etc… and sent it off.

It was an amazing day when Ed called my office one afternoon to tell me that we were a finalist.  So a few weeks later, myself and a math instructor (Chuck), packed up and headed for Orlando.  We had to do a presentation and also man a booth at the conference.  Looking at the other booths we knew we wouldn’t win the award.  We’d probably spent $20 on each of our packets, we’d been required to bring like 25, so our total in on the materials was a little over $500.  Looking around at the other booths, we saw schools with full video systems and professionally made presentations running on their screens.  Talking to a few of the folks we realized that several schools had spent tens of thousands of dollars on their materials, and had brought presidents and trustees to the conference as part of their five person presentation teams.  Some of them were absolute veterans of the process and some were past winners.

So Chuck and I smiled, shrugged and did our thing.  Our presentation went well even if we did look like the scholarship students at a private school.  We had a great week in Orlando, the food at the conference was incredible and we made a lot of great contacts and hey, as finalists we’d still get a lovely glass trophy at the awards luncheon the last day.  So at the luncheon, we got called up, got our trophy, our picture taken and it was all really wonderful.  We returned to our table and dug into a really incredible lunch.  We’d made friends during the week with a group from another college who also hadn’t invested heavily and also was just enjoying the week with no thought of winning the award.  To be honest, we weren’t paying much attention to the award ceremony and were having a great time.  The Bellwether is broken into three categories and the first two category award winners were named, fawned over and congratulated.  Our biggest concern was making sure we got through dessert before we had to pack up and head to the airport after the luncheon.  As we were digging into our cheesecake, it was quite good, they were introducing the final winner by describing the winners’ program.  Suddenly Chuck dropped his fork, the table went quiet and our friends said, “holy shit, this is you.” Chuck immediately said, “you’re going up there, not me.”  Then they said it, and the winner of the Bellwether is Hartnell College.

It was an absolute mind blowing and truly wonderful surprise.  We got a huge glass trophy, photos that went national.  When we called the college, I made his assistant interrupt an important meeting, Ed lost his mind with excitement.  There was a lots of positive fallout, a nationally published article, Chuck, I and the trophy were featured on the schedule of classes and the catalog the next fall, I won manager or the year for the college.  It certainly helped us bring in additional money from NSF and HP for the program and out students.  It was a great honor.  Honestly no one thought we would win this award and it was a truly wonderful surprise and wonderful memory.
