It’s been a tough week, grief is a funny thing, it creeps up and hits you when you least expect it.  You feel good one minute and then something triggers it and the water works start.  It’s necessary, you have to work through these things, you bottle them up and you pop like a balloon.  But the process is slow and of course, when you’re already down you start to see and focus on the negatives all around you.  This week my grief exacerbated anything that went wrong, my car Cd player went south, my sleep patterns went to shit, I put on two pounds, etc… When you’re sliding into the well all of these things just push you deeper into the abyss.  A really interesting effect was it amped up my anxiety levels, I’m not a particularly anxious person, but I have been this week, hard week.

However, a few things have also played into my favor this week.  First, the necessities, when things are wrong you have to make sure you are eating right, sleeping right and that you are safe.  Well I’m safe, I have a roof over my head, I’m eating well and working out every day but my sleep has been off horribly this week as to be expected.  But lack of sleep can be remedied and I slept in the other day.  It helps that in the middle of November I’m in Florida and the weather is good, it helps that it’s Fall, my favorite time of year, that I’m near the ocean which brings me peace and finally that it was Thanksgiving week.

01I snuck away for the holiday to Mobile, AL to hold up in a Homewood Suite for a few days.  My current residence has minimal cooking potential and I love to cook and eat for Thanksgiving.  So the full kitchen in the hotel room, cable TV and a whirlpool tub meant, cooking (which I love to do), good eating, lots of football to watch and a big warm tub to relax in.  It was just what the Reverend ordered for himself.

Today my personal prescription was simple happiness, sun, sand and waves.  I spent an hour this afternoon walking the beach at Perdido Key.  It was a beautiful day in the seventies, the water was beautiful and I was luck to see some cool beach life.  A bunch of small mussels washed up and had to keep digging themselves back into the sand after each wave as they gradually moved back out off the surf line, amazing and beautiful to watch.

fix flowersSo remember my friends, when things go south, take care of the basics and find things that bring you pleasure and happiness.  Engage them as fully as possible and never forget about beauty whether in nature or in art, it has the ability to make you feel better.  So, the end of a hard week personally, a crazy week in the world and the optimism to expect better weeks to come with plenty of happy days my friends ~ Rev Kane

There is a series I’ve always wanted to do, a book I’ve always wanted to write called 20 famous people worth having a beer with.  Essentially, I want to interview famous people who actually seem down to earth, people who for as famous as they are, seem like they’d still be regular enough people that you’d want to have a drink with them.  Since it is unlikely that I’ll get that opportunity anytime soon, I’ve decided to make up the interviews.  We all have so many imaginary conversations in our heads, I’ve just decided to have some of mine in the ether and share them with you.  This is meant to be a bit of fun, I hope it’s taken that way and hey, if any of the people I’m writing about, the living ones anyway, want to correct the record with an actual interview, I’m all in. ~ Rev Kane

So for those of you who have been living in a cave for the last 50 years with no access to television or radio or internet or access to a movie theater, William Shatner is simply one of the most recognizable humans on the planet.  He was an actor in the 60’s appearing in numerous TV shows including one of the most acclaimed Twilight Zone episodes in history, Nightmare at 20,000 feet, before landing the role he is most famous for, Captain William T Kirk of the Starship Enterprise.  Star Trek, through several incarnations of TV shows, multiple movies and reboots is arguably the most popular TV series of all-time.

But Shatner’s fame did not stop there, he would in the 80’s go on to be TJ Hooker in the series of the same name and became famous to a whole new generation of TV viewers. Then he became popular on TV again and insanely wealthy from his deal to do his Priceline commercials by taking stock options instead of pay, reportedly making $600 million.  One of my favorite things William Shatner has ever  done was an interview show called Raw Nerve.  In my opinion, it was the best interview show ever done on television.

Shatner: Call me Bill.

Me: Excellent, that’s exactly the perfect segue into where I’d like to start.  You see, you’ve always reminded me of my father a bit.

Shatner: Hold on, when and where were you born?

Me: August, 1964 – conceived on Thanksgiving I’m told.

Shatner: Ok, Thanksgiving 63, I can assure you I was no where near NY, I was filming in California.

Me: Ha ha Bill, wasn’t suggesting anything, just something in your mannerisms reminds me of him.  Perhaps that why I’ve always been such a fan!  I started early, watching Star Trek as a munchkin in the 60’s and then every episode of reruns on cable in the 70’s.  It was such a groundbreaking show, did it feel that way filming it?

Shatner: No, not most of the time, it was a job, on a show that frankly wasn’t getting great ratings.  It was until the famous kiss that I really had a sense that we were doing something special.  I never thought it would turn into what it did, or last the way it has!

Me: I think one of the funniest things I ever saw was your Trekkie skit on SNL.  How did that come about?

Shatner: Seriously, that skit is an ongoing conversation backstage at every CON ever!  I love the damn nerds, but….whew.

Me:  One thing I absolutely have to address with you is your show Raw Nerve.  I personally think that it is the single best interview show to have ever been on television.

Shatner: Thank you!

Me: Why do you think that is?

Shatner: I’m willing Shatner <serious awkward silence>

Me: That’s it, that’s the whole answer?

Shatner: Who has the real interview show, who has the imaginary one?

Burning Man gets talked about in many ways every year, those who have never attended paint upon it what they would like it to be.  Those who want to think it’s evil talk about nothing but drugs and immoral behavior.  Those who want it to be a great party describe it as such, some see it as spirituality.  I have always said you can find and make the event whatever you want or need it to be.  The center piece of the event for many is the burning of the man the last Saturday night of the event.  I have often described it as the equivalent of a New Year’s Eve celebration with a whole lot of fire and art.

It happens every year: You vow to enjoy the holidays, spend quality time with your friends and family, and maybe even give back to your community. Then, little by little, your stress level increases. Family time becomes filled with anxiety. Holiday parties are another dreaded task on your to-do list. And all that shopping and entertaining causes worry over your budget.

If you find yourself losing the holiday spirit this year, we recommend you stop, take a deep breath, and then follow these tips for getting back to your jolly self.

    • Take a time-out. Even a quick spin around the neighborhood to breathe in the fresh air and admire holiday displays can boost your mood. Try to find at least a few minutes every day for yourself — whether it’s to enjoy a hot cup of tea, or listen to our guided imagery podcast
    • Learn to say, “no.” If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s OK to skip a party or two. Or put off your volunteer work until the spring. Pick the events and efforts you truly want to be a part of, and let go of the guilt about sending your regrets to the others
    • Sweat out the stress. It’s easy to let exercise take a back burner during the holidays, but physical activity can work wonders on your outlook. Learn about the emotional benefits of working out and get ideas for activities that you’ll enjoy
      * Grab a pal. Sometimes, a good chat with a friend is all you need to get back on track. Or, how about gathering a group for a relaxing at-home spa event?
    • Stay organized. Fight that frazzled feeling by keeping your calendar up-to-date, organizing your space, and planning ahead.

And remember, if you feel overwhelmed or depressed for more than a couple weeks, it might be something more than a case of holiday stress. Speak with your physician or call Mental Health, Behavioral Health, or Member Services in your area to ask about resources that can help you. You can find those phone numbers online.

1Each year around this time I start a series of posts that last throughout the holiday season to try to give folks a boost to their happiness.  The holidays for many people are wonderful, for most people are stressful and for some of us damn near unbearable.  And yes, I include myself in that last category.

There are certainly elements of the holidays that I enjoy, I love giving good presents. The kind of presents that make people realize I know them and took the time to really think about them and give them something that is very special to them.  I love Thanksgiving, being out in nature, the cooking, the eating, the football watching.  I’ve never been much of a fan of Christmas or New Years, apart from the gift giving.

2I think that there are a combination of things that hit me pretty hard during the holidays.  First, typically being alone and not having immediate community is hard for me during a time of year where everyone makes a huge deal of how wonderful it is to be with the people they love.  And don’t get me wrong, family and friends often invite me into their celebrations and I’ve joined in some.  A friend in Las Vegas does a wonderful open celebration each year at Thanksgiving.  But Christmas is the kicker and there is nothing more awkward than crashing someone else’s Christmas.  New Year’s Eve, amateur night has never been fun for me, too much booze for too many people who don’t drink very often, too often leads to bad situations.  Finally, the shortest days of the year fall all over these holidays as well.  Cold, dark, short days can be real triggers for my mood to tank.

Sitting down tonight to write my Sunday night post and what’s really on my mind is Monday morning.  Work has been nuts for the last month, I’m working late one to two nights a week, I’m working six days a week.  This is not my normal mode of operation, at least it hasn’t been in a very long time since I began focusing on keeping my work and non-work life in better balance.  But we all have those times where circumstances and deadlines overrule the way things should be.  As long as this is a temporary situation, and mine should be, it’s ok.  It’s when this becomes the status quo that you absolutely need to make a change in your life.

So I’m not looking forward to the morning or this week, another very busy week, hopefully the last hectic week for a time.  However, instead of looking grudgingly at the morning, I’ve decided to think about kindness tonight.  I’ve written on kindness many times on this site for a very simple reason.  One of the best ways to make yourself happier is by doing something to make others happier.

On our campus we have recently begun a food pantry for students who are having issues with having enough to eat.  It’s an issue that hits close to home, there were a couple of times, happily only a couple, when as a kid I was in that situation.  Those times made a deep mark on me.  So on Friday a colleague and I got to go food shopping, spending $300 of some state funds earmarked for the purpose.  It felt good to helping out and I will be shopping once again after the holiday supplies run low on my own dime to keep the project going.  I tell you this not to brag or look good, but to remind you that there are ways in which all of us can help, however small, anything you can do matters as long as you are extending a kindness and that kindness will always mak it a happy day my friends. ~ Rev Kane

The holidays are coming, well, in fact, they are already here.  I don’t really count Thanksgiving because it is my favorite holiday of the year and to me, because of that it stands on its own.  But the season is upon us, whether it is Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Years Eve, Saturnalia,  Boxing Day or the Fiesta of our Lady of Guadalupe.

To be honest I don’t like this time of year, for me it’s a mix of a lot of things.  Short days, cold nights, bad weather and Christmas.  In general I really am not fond of Christmas, as a child I don’t remember many good ones.  But you know, in America you are supposed to LOVE Christmas, you’re supposed to want to hear Christmas Carols 24 hours a day, visits to relatives houses, you’re supposed to wear stupid hats and ugly sweaters.

01For me, for a lot of years, the holidays were the most depressing time of the year for me.  I would spiral, isolate myself and generally just be miserable.  The one high point for me has always been giving gifts.  I love finding a meaningful gift that shows the people I care about that I know them and know what makes them happy.  I especially love doing this for my nieces and nephews.  This year there has been a new fun little wrinkle, my sister has enlisted me to help out with her Elf on the Shelf so my niece and nephew got a surprise this morning, their elves had gone west.

01So over the next week I’ll be playing along while the elves are on their west coast vacation.  A little something for my nieces and nephews and more than just a bit for their Uncle Mike as well, to make all of our holidays a little more fun.

So friends I find myself once again in the Armstrong Redwood Reserve to do a couple of days of training hikes. California also happily finds itself being hit by a series of pacific storms dropping significant rain. So as I laid down last night to sleep and the rain began to beat on the roof I wasn’t surprised, nor was I upset. In the morning the rain had not let up, in fact it was heavier and more steady than it had been the night before.

The nice thing is that this would be the first opportunity I’ve had to test out my rain gear. So I geared up, heavier undershirt, lightweight rain coat, cycling rain gloves with my silk liners, my new rain skirt and my Merrell cross-trainers.

As if the universe wanted to join in, as I pulled into the parking lot the rain cranked up like a fire hose, if you’re going to test your gear, you may as well test it full on.

The beginning of a hike in the rain is never comfortable for me, I’m always a bit grouchy, I’m worrying about my gear, my footing, basically I’m stressing out and expecting the worst. However the true beauty of hiking is that as you walk stress falls away. The rain hits you but it’s ok, you don’t fall on your ass as soon as you hit the first slope, you start focusing on the hike. All the little things that eat up your brain when you are walking; picking the right spots to step and trying to stay out of the streams of water running down the hill,  evaluating your handholds on your trekking poles, getting the hood of the rain jacket appropriately placed on your head, and remembering to focus on your breathing.

The focus is particularly strong in the rain and the world grows closer.
In the rain, with a hood up, the rain beating on your head sound is deadened a bit, your vision is slightly restricted and things get close and quiet, you’re more focused on the details of the hike. I like this and particularly in a dark redwood forest the closeness leads to a feeling of peace.

So today was a peaceful day, my hands were soaked through, my body was soaked, sweat and humidity more than rain. My Morrell Moabs were exactly as billed, completely useless at keeping your feet dry, but tonight we’ll see if they dry out quickly also as advertised. The rain coat did its job and I LOVE my rain skirt!!! I hate rain pants, a pain to get on over your boots or worse, you have to take your boots off to put them on. The swish-swish noise of rain pants kind of drives me nuts, so when I read about a rain skirt I had to give it a try. It’s perfect, easy on and off, keeps the rain off of your legs, extremely light, packs up tiny, velcroes down the side which even makes rest stops easy to deal with. Hell, if need be it could serve as an impromptu rain tarp, love, love, love it.

So today the most beautiful thing I saw was a waterfall, I’d walked this path a number of times and always wondered why there was a walkway off to one side. Today I learned why, there is a lovely little waterfall just off the trail.

100_1798What made me happy today was just being free and walking in the in the rain without a care.

What I learned today, was the beginning of the understanding of what spring on the AT is going to be like, particularly as I sit here drying my gear, a luxury I won’t have most nights on the trail.

Day 2

So my second day was a mess (at least my shoes had dried out), started out with the intent of testing my new video camera, battery was dead. This stressed me out way more than it should have, also, although no aches and pains it was one of those days when you just don’t have it. So I was grouchy and bitching under my breath and feeling overly tired and I came quickly to a little bit of reality, I was being an idiot.

So I stopped, took a break on a climb and took about 2 minutes to just do a very simple meditation. Just to focus on my breathing, really simple, stop, breathe, let it flow in and out and after a couple of minutes I felt better. So I powered through and did the hike, was happy to have put in the miles, even in the downpour that was the last couple of miles. Once I got my head right it was a really wonderful and peaceful walk in the fog, the clouds and the rain.

What was the most beautiful thing I saw today? It was an old couple, a really old man and his really old dog, out for a walk. They both looked over and kind of smiled at me as they hobbled along together. They looked like they’d been together a very long time.

What I learned today was more of a reminder than something new, just remembering to breathe, to keep working toward getting into the flow of this journey I’m currently on.

What made me happy, was the most beautiful thing I saw today, the dog and the old man, out walking in the rain really touched my heart and left me smiling for quite a while today.

I topped the day off with a long, hot bath, I leave the mountains in the morning and head for two nights on the ocean, falling asleep to the sounds of waves outside my door. Today was a wonderful day and I hope you had a happy day as well my friends ~ Rev Kane
