Deng Ming-Dao on Reflection

Deng Ming-Dao on Reflection

Tonight we revisit one of my favorite writers, Deng Ming-Dao and his thoughts on reflection.  It is so important that we look at ourselves and given the nature of sight, the only way to do that is through our reflections, have a happy day my friends ~ Rev Kane

moon

Reflection

Moon above water
Sit in solitude

If waters are placid, the moon will be mirrored perfectly.  If we still ourselves, we can mirror the divine perfectly.  But if we engage solely in the frenetic activities of our daily involvements, if we seek to impose our own schemes on the natural order, and if we allow ourselves to become absorbed in self-centered views, the surface of our waters becomes turbulent.  Then we cannot be receptive to Tao.

There is no effort that we can make to sill ourselves.  True stillness comes naturally from moments of solitude where we allow our minds to settle.  Just as water seeks its own level, the mind will gravitate toward the holy.  Muddy water will become clear if allowed to stand undisturbed, and so too will the mind become clear if it is allowed to be still.

Neither the water nor the moon make any effort to achieve a reflection.  In the same way, meditation will be natural and immediate.

Happiness & Friendship

Happiness & Friendship

happiness friendshipIn order to have great happiness you have to have great pain and unhappiness – otherwise how would you know when you’re happy?  ~ Leslie Caron

Recently I wrote a poem, it was a poem about hope and happiness, the joy of your fondest wishes coming true only to find you have lost the very thing you wished for in your life.  The despair that follows can be overwhelming and lead to feeling very hopeless.  When I went through a time like this in my life, what brought me out was a friend who reached out and brought me out of the darkness I was in.  She didn’t do anything special, no grand gestures, she was just there for me.  She was there consistently and for a time constantly, she listened, she didn’t judge, she didn’t pretend she had an answer for what I was going through, she didn’t care that I wasn’t being rational.  She was just there and she cared about me.

The impressive part was that she was 1200 miles away, she did all of this by phone and by e-mail.  Prior to that time she had already in a very short time become a good friend, her actions have made her one of my most treasured friends.  The important thing about this story is that it reminds us that what’s important between people is that we care about each other.  Caring for each other not only can make others happy but can increase our happiness as well.  Give someone a hug and have a happy day my friends ~ Rev Kane

The words of Martin Luther King Jr.

The words of Martin Luther King Jr.

For those of you who read this blog regularly you know I often use quotes on the pieces I publish as such I’ve created files of quotes from many of the people I admire.  Today on Martin Luther King Jr. Day a collection of his words, enjoy, and have a happy day my friends ~ Rev Kane

A man can’t ride your back unless it’s bent.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Almost always, the creative dedicated minority has made the world better.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Life’s most urgent question is: what are you doing for others?
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Philanthropy is commendable, but it must not cause the philanthropist to overlook the circumstances of economic injustice which make philanthropy necessary.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Rarely do we find men who willingly engage in hard, solid thinking. There is an almost universal quest for easy answers and half-baked solutions. Nothing pains some people more than having to think.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

The hope of a secure and livable world lies with disciplined nonconformists who are dedicated to justice, peace and brotherhood.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

The quality, not the longevity, of one’s life is what is important.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

The time is always right to do what is right.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Happiness and Equality on MLK Day

Happiness and Equality on MLK Day

An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

On Monday we celebrate Martin Luther King’s birthday and so tonight I want to talk a little about equality.  When we discuss happiness we often naturally think of our own happiness, how to increase it, how to make our own lives better.  It’s less common for us to focus on other people’s happiness and quite rare to think at the level of the happiness of an entire nation.

We honor Martin Luther King of course for his accomplishments, deeds and words but also as a symbol of the American Civil Rights movement and the change it brought to our country.  Equality brings freedom and freedom brings more happiness.  From gaining the ability to vote, to the election of President Obama, African-Americans have made significant gains over the last 50 years.  As a result I will be bold enough to say all of us are happier.  It’s difficult to be happy in a country where unfairness and inequality is so prevalent even if you are not a member of the group being treated unequally.

When I was a graduate student we had a custodian, Mr. Avery and he was in his late 70’s and had been working at the university since the late 50’s or early 60’s.  We would often chat at night when he was cleaning the floor on which my office was located.  On several occasions we chatted about what it was like at the university in those early days when he first started working there.  He smiled at one point and said to me, “do you notice, I never walk past the fountain down the hall without stopping to take a drink.”  I hadn’t noticed and told him so, “well, that used to be a whites only fountain.”  It was certainly a little thing but it made him happy.  So on the Martin Luther King Day we should remember the little things as well as the big things.  We should also not forgot that inequality still exists in our country.

Unfortunately most minority groups in this country still lag behind whites in many categories.  Disabled people still face societal obstacles and members of the LGBT community struggle to even have the basic right to marry the people they love.   So let’s continue fighting for equality, which is also a fight for a happier world, have a happy day my friends ~ Rev Kane

A Collection of Wisdom by the Dalai Lama

A Collection of Wisdom by the Dalai Lama

A collection of quotes by the Dalai Lama on happiness and how to live a happier life ~ Rev Kane

Happiness arises as a result of different causes and conditions. If you harm someone out of anger, you may feel some superficial satisfaction, but deep down you know it was wrong. Your confidence will be undermined. However, if you have an altruistic attitude, you’ll feel comfortable and confident in the presence of others.

There are two kinds of happiness – the temporary pleasure derived primarily from material comfort alone and another more enduring comfort that results from the thorough transformation and development of the mind. We can see in our own lives that the latter form of happiness is superior because when our mental state is calm and happy, we can easily put up with minor pains and physical discomforts. On the other hand, when our mind is restless and upset, the most comfortable physical facilities do not make us happy.

Those who have little interest in spirituality shouldn’t think that human inner values don’t apply to you. The inner peace of an alert and calm mind are the source of real happiness and good health. Our human intelligence tells us which of our emotions are positive and helpful and which are damaging and to be restrained or avoided.

By implementing the practice of love and compassion, we will naturally live a non-violent way of life. Helping others and not harming them is the work of non-violence. We need to develop love, compassion and forgiveness to develop inner peace and that naturally gives rise to non-violent conduct.

However capable and skillful an individual may be, left alone, he or she will not survive. When we are sick or very young or very old, we must depend on the support of others. There is no significant division between us and other people, because our basic natures are the same. If we wish to ensure everyone’s peace and happiness we need to cultivate a healthy respect for the diversity of our peoples and cultures, founded on an understanding of this fundamental sameness of all human beings.

When we have inner peace, we can be at peace with those around us. When our community is in a state of peace, it can share that peace with neighboring communities and so on. When we feel love and kindness toward others, it not only makes others feel loved and cared for, but it helps us also to develop inner happiness and peace.

The ultimate source of a happy life is warm-heartedness. This means extending to others the kind of concern we have for ourselves. On a simple level we find that if we have a compassionate heart we naturally have more friends. And scientists today are discovering that while anger and hatred eat into our immune system, warm-heartedness and compassion are good for our health.

A New Year’s resolution to lose weight, with a twist

A New Year’s resolution to lose weight, with a twist

2013

Happy New Year my friends, I know many people who are happy to see 2012 go; it was a tough year for a lot of folks.  Welcome 2013, I truly believe this is going to be a fabulous year, not sure why but 2013 seems to have a good incoming vibe.  Let’s all hope I’m right.

So many of you will be sitting down to make a list of resolutions for the next year.  As usual, a lot of us will resolve to lose weight this year.  I’d ask you to tweak the resolution just a bit.  Resolve to lose some weight this year, but let’s lose the weight that truly holds us down, the emotional weight.  Let’s take a look at our lives and lose the weight of things that hold us down.  Let’s lose the negative people and things, the stuff in our life that makes us feel bad.  Let’s actively look to add things to our life that provide happiness and positivity.  It’s an absolute cliché but a wonderful thought, accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative, and have a happy year my friends ~ Rev Kane
