The Importance of Redemption and Forgiveness

The Importance of Redemption and Forgiveness

forgivenessRedemption is not perfection.  The redeemed must realize their imperfections. ~ John Piper

In the past month I’ve had two really important conversations with two young men.  Both of these young men have made mistakes, they’ve wronged people and to some extent both feel like their life is over, that they can’t come back from the mistakes they have made.  My message to both of them was simply that they are incorrect, redemption is a very real thing.  I know this, because I’ve come back from a lot of mistakes in my life.  The conversations led to the poem I wrote that’s included at the end of this post.

forgiveness, redemptionWe’ve all made mistakes, we’ve all done wrong.  For some of you these have been small things.  For some of us, well, we’ve done some really bad things to other people.  I’ve done bad things, I’ll leave it at that.  I’ve made mistakes, I became an alcoholic, I abused drugs, failed out of college.  I’ve treated some people in my life badly, I failed a friend terribly as she was dying of cancer.  As she was dying I apologized for not being there for her the way I should have been.  She was an amazing person, and she forgave me for not being there and thanked me for all of the times I had been in her life.  Tears fill my eyes thinking about it, but she taught me something incredibly important that day.  She taught me how powerful forgiveness can be.  Because of her and the work I’ve done in my life, I’ve also learned how powerful redemption can be and I know, above all other things, the hardest thing is to forgive yourself, to find redemption in your own eyes for the things that you have done.

The thing is my friends, redemption is possible.  The way I have come to think about it is this, I believe what is important in the end, is what does the balance sheet look like.  How much good have you done, to compare with the bad?  The more bad you’ve done, the more good you have to do.  I’m not necessarily talking about grand gestures, little things count and they add up.  I’m talking about doing good every day, every little kindness, every act of caring, the responsibilities you take on for others.  To me, intentions mean a lot, so are you trying to do good, are you trying to help others in their lives.  Are you a good parent, a good child, a good friend and how do you treat strangers in your life, how do you treat the service people you encounter?  Basically, how do you give of yourself to make a positive impact on other people’s lives?

forgiveness, redemptionOne thing that you have to get past in the process of redemption is the mindset of self punishment.  Most of us have been socialized under social and religious systems that emphasis punishment in one form or another.  Whether it be the idea of an eye for eye or punishment in the afterlife.  Those of us who have done wrong believe that we can never be forgiven, so we believe that we should always be punished.  This sets up a self-fulfilling prophecy, if you always feel like you should be punished, that you’re never worthy of good things, well, good things have a tendency not to come your way.  So what do you do?

You have to change your mindset, you have to move forward, work towards redemption and turning the balance sheet to the positive.  Then at some point, you have to forgive yourself for your past transgressions, and change your mindset to understand that although you’ve done wrong, you can and are worthy of good things happening in your life.  This was the most important thing both of these young men needed to hear.

redemption

Our society also needs to improve in this aspect.  We are increasingly becoming a society that believes in putting scarlet letters on people.  We are so quick, especially on social media, to want to condemn people forever for any past transgression, anything they have done that does not conform to our current understanding of how things should be.  I’m not saying we should excuse bad behavior, but that if someone makes a mistake, takes responsibility for it, pays penance and works to do better, then forgiveness should be a possibility.

That’s my message and my ask for you tonight my friends, recognize the good people are trying to do, no matter what they’ve done in the past, and try and be forgiving.  Try and do good for others, never to your own detriment.  I don’t want anyone to harm their own life trying to help others.  I don’t want anyone forgiving someone who after being forgiven before repeats the same behavior, becoming a doormat does not make you a good person. Be strong, try and live a good life, do good for others and recognize when others are doing the same, and have a happy day my friends.  ~ Rev Kane

I came back                                                                        12/16/19
Alone, weird, scared
sitting in the dark, crying
a knot in my stomach for years
but I came back

Awkward, crazy haired
fitting in with no one
short, fat, unattractive
but I came back

Drunk, stoned, lost
wasted daily
failing out of college
but I came back

Living as a failure
angry, alone
wanting to kill my father
but I came back

Desperate for connection
becoming a whore
going off with anyone who caught my eye
but I came back

I came to know myself
I got straight
I got sober
I did the work
I’ve come all the way back
what matters most
from me to you
is not that I came back
but so can you

The Reason for the Season

The Reason for the Season

life quote

Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more. ~ H. Jackson Brown

Tonight my friends I am sharing with you a very difficult and special post.  This morning an old friend reached out to me to ask me to help with something she was doing.  You see her five year-old nephew has terminal liver cancer.  There’s nothing left for them to do but to keep him happy and comfortable.  He loves getting mail and so she was asking my help to see if they could get him a postcard from all 50 states.  I of course said yes, as my heart broke.  The idea of losing one of my nieces or nephews at five years-old is unimaginable to me.

So my friends, tonight I’m writing to ask you to help out as well.  This is exactly the type of thing I would love the Ministry of Happiness to be able to assist with.  So I’ve decided, to protect the family’s privacy to act as an aggregator for the postcards.  I would love it if this blog, if my readers, you my friends could help provide this little man with some joy in his life.  Help us, not only get him a card from every state, but also from as many countries as possible.  Show this young man that in this world and in this time where people seem so self-centered and uncaring, that people still have enough space in their hearts and in their lives to bring a young, ill child some joy and happiness.

So I’m asking two things:

  1.  The address is below, if you can, could you take some time to send a card.  A simple message, Happy New Year Miles from wherever your sending it from would be magnificent.
  2. Spread this post far and wide, it would be so amazing to send this little a thousand little lights of love in the form or notes and cards.

Address postcards, notes and cards to:

For Miles

PO Box 1253
San Bruno, CA 94066

This all has touched me so much, and broken my heart, please help out my friends and help Miles have some happy days. You’ll have my eternal gratitude. ~ Rev Kane

A Holiday Six Pack

A Holiday Six Pack

holiday six packTalk to yourself like you would to someone you love. ~ Brene Brown

So tonight a smattering, a six pack if you will, of happiness related thoughts for your holiday season.

Self-care at Christmas

During the holiday season please my friends take care of yourself.  I know it’s that time of year, you’re out shopping for others, cooking for others, meeting family obligations, wrapping presents, sending out cards and generally trying to be good to others.  That is of course fantastic and the point of the season after all.  But it’s truly important that you don’t do that to the detriment of yourself.  It’s like they tell you on the airplane, put your own oxygen mask on first, before helping others.  You’re no good to others if you’re burned out and miserable.  So yes, do lots of things for others, but take the time to take care of yourself.  So, slip that spa appointment in there somewhere, or just take fifteen minutes to sit someplace quiet and sip a cup of coffee or tea.

Relax, be giving and kind

Part of that self care is to relax and not let the holiday madness get to you.  Do something that most others won’t be doing during the season.  Take your time, relax and be extra kind.  So hold the door open, let that person in traffic, don’t jump on your horn when you get cut off.  Take an extra breath whenever possible, smile more, say hello and wish people a happy holiday.  You’ll feel better and make others feel better as well.

Tips for Holiday Travel

This time of year many of us will be traveling, in fact it has been reported that this will be the busiest travel year in history.  The best advice I can give, some of which I talked about in my post, tips for holiday travel, is to not be in a hurry.  Force patience on yourself by giving yourself extra time to reach your destination.  Pick flights with longer layovers to avoid delays causing you to miss a flight.  Take those longer layovers and find out if there is something fun happening at your layover airport.  Give yourself extra time for everything, security will be slower, taxis and rideshares will take longer.  Don’t put yourself on a schedule that will also skyrocket your blood pressure.  The piece I linked to includes some advice on how to make holiday travel with children more tolerable as well.

Give a really great gift

I’ve always really tried to give good gifts.  An example, my mother and one of her neighbors have recently gotten interested in the stars they see just after sunset.  So, I bought her a telescope.  Giving good gifts is about thinking what people are interested and excited about and finding something that parallels this interest.  So this year, think about someone, really think about what they really love and find them a gift they will love.  It doesn’t have to be expensive, just something that will really make someone happy.  In this time of materialism and commerce, a thoughtful gift can really touch someone’s heart because it shows them that you really care about who they are.

Be grateful for the gifts you get and have

We have talked about gratitude so much on this blog because it’s really important to our well-being and happiness.  Truly being grateful for the gifts in your life, (people and even yes actual presents), will make you feel better about your life and generally happier.  Take just a few minutes every single day to think about how fortunate you truly are, no matter how bad the day might be going.

Have fun

Please have fun this holiday season, don’t get so hung up on your responsibilities and obligations that you forget to have a good time.  Make sure that throughout the holiday season you schedule some time to just enjoy yourself. If you live in the snow, go make a snowman or sledding, go ice skating or have a really nice dinner out.  Make positive use of those days off from work and have happy days my friends.  ~ Rev Kane

Holiday Happiness: Resources for Fighting Holiday Depression

Holiday Happiness: Resources for Fighting Holiday Depression

If you don’t think your anxiety, depression, sadness and stress impact your physical health, think again. All of these emotions trigger chemical reactions in your body, which can lead to inflammation and a weakened immune system. Learn how to cope, sweet friend. There will always be dark days. ~ Kris Carr

The holidays are a very stressful time for everyone and an exceptionally hard time for some.  So, until the New Year I’ll be posting a Holiday Happiness post each day to try help folks out who are struggling.  As always you can reach out to me at Happinesskane@aol.com for a kind word or someone to listen. ~ Rev Kane

Hello friends, tonight we continue our posts on holiday depression with a collection of resources that I hope will help you cope if your mood starts to suffer during the holiday season.  Let me be clear, we are not talking about clinical depression.  Clinical depression is a disease that needs serious attention and treatment.  If you are feeling down and not bouncing back after the holiday season then maybe something more serious is going on.  At that point I’d check in with a medical professional and have a conversation.

Practical and Powerful Ways to Overcome Depression – I really love this piece, simple straightforward and sound advice.  Get outside, exercise, get sleep, eat better, ridiculously simple but also highly effective.

Nine effective treatments for overcoming mild depression – I like the way this piece starts out, recommendations for exercise, light therapy and some supplements.  The last couple recommendations are fairly heavy and seem more directed to more serious depression.

From WebMD, 10 Natural Depression Treatments – There is a definite pattern in the advice offered from various resources.  Get the basics right, eat, sleep, safety and security.

This time of year you may also be suffering from the most terribly acronymed issue ever, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).  So this piece is worth a quick read as well, you’ll definitely see some overlap between how to deal with both issues.

Holiday Happiness: Happiness Moment

The holidays are often a very stressful period for people so for the next 34 days (Thanksgiving through Christmas) we’re going to do a post a day, something happy and uplifting each day, perhaps an image, a poem, a quote, a moment of happiness or some bit of wisdom all in an effort to boost everyone’s happiness a little bit.  You can do your part by paying it forward, send these little bits of happiness on to others and ask that they do the same and as always, have a happy day my friends ~ Rev Kane

A happy little story today about a moment of happiness, on Halloween night I had a 18 month old Jedi Knight come knocking on my door.  The young Ben Kenobi scammed me out of an extra piece of candy.  He was adorable, and even helped me close my door and stood there waving, left me smiling all night.
