Happiness in the Simple Pleasures

Happiness in the Simple Pleasures

leaves, fall, photographyLife is truly lived in the moments of simplicity! ~ Avijeet Das

For the last couple of years there has been a bit of a push back on the idea of seeking happiness.  You see a lot of posts like this one, Stop Chasing Happiness.  The piece is actually pretty good and there are some great tips in it about how to live a happier life.  Yes, I get the irony in that sentence.  Part of the issue is the ambiguous nature of the word happiness.  Other than a 70’s mood ring, there isn’t a way to know now I’m happy, now I’m not.  Also, people often put unrealistic expectations on the term or continually defer to, I’ll be happy when…. instead of enjoying the happiness they are experience at the moment.  This is one of the reasons I often say the suggestions I make will help you live a happier life.  No one is happy all of the time, nor should anyone expect to be.  It’s important to take pleasure, contentment and find happiness in your everyday ordinary life.

backscratcher, simple pleasure

So tonight I want to talk about some of the simple pleasures in my life, in order to get you to think of some of the same in your life.  I’m going to start with having my back scratched, man, there isn’t much that’s better than a good back scratching.  My oldest niece is a world class back scratcher but she lives about 3000 miles away.  Luckily, backscratchers exist.  I spent about three months living in my aunt’s cabin in Utah one year and next to the bed was a simple wooden backscratcher.  I became thoroughly addicted to how good it felt at night to scratch my own back.  So much, that when I stopped traveling that year and settled down to work, the first thing I did once my apartment was set up was to order a backscratcher.  I still have it 15 years later and still use it almost every single day.

head massager, simple pleasure

Several years ago my wonderful friend KC gave me a gift.  As you can see from the image it looked like some artistic rendering of an alien jellyfish.  I’m always thankful anyone would give me a gift but was more than a little skeptical about this crazy looking thing.  Then when I got home I started to try and use it and there was a moment as the little tentacles rolled along my scalp that I had one of those full body spinal shivers.  The kind where that wave of pleasure rolls through your body and you have that moment of physical and mental bliss.  I’m even more addicted to this thing now that I’ve shaved my head, head massages are a pretty normal part of my life these days and still incredibly wonderful.

We all have these simple pleasures.  For some it’s a quiet cup of coffee or tea early in the morning before anyone else is awake.  For others a nice piece of chocolate and I think for all of us, a really good hug qualifies.  I could list a ton of others, sitting quietly listening to an album in the dark, laying out flat and having my spine crack back into place, a really great piece of pizza and a coke.  Whatever those small things are in your life isn’t important, what’s important is that we take time to stop, appreciate and be mindful of those moments.  These small moments come so much more frequently than the big moments, that if you add them up over time, they’re likely more important.  So don’t let them slip by my friends.  I’m now going to go sit in my favorite reclining camping chair and massage my head while I listen to some music.  Hope you can find some time today to indulge in one of yours and have a happy moment my friends.  ~ Rev Kane

Happiness and Balance

Happiness and Balance

happiness, balance, be happy

Happiness and Balance

Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance, order, rhythm and harmony.  ~ Thomas Merton

Balance is a concept we will come back to time and time again on this blog.   Even in attaining happiness, everything has to be done in it’s measure, all aspects of your life must be balanced.  This is something we all understand intellectually but often fail to achieve in our life.  Of course I’m being a little hypocritical as I’m writing this after coming home from working an eleven hour day.  So I return to my reading for the day, and share my daily meditation with you courtesy of Deng Ming-Dao.  Have a happy day my friends ~ Rev Kane

Balance

Summer withered grass to flaxen yellow,
Scorched leaves to brittle paper,
Dried lakes to cracked clay.

Chill autumn brought little relief-
But with the early gentle rains,
The earth’s fissure softened
And desiccated plans began to dissolve.
Slowly, balance comes once again.

Many cultures describe old people as having seen many winters.  These elders have seen many cycles come and go, and their wisdom comes from long observation of life’s rising and falling.  If we have a long-range view, then we realize that equilibrium comes in the course of nature’s progression.  Nature does not achieve balance by keeping to one level.  Rather, elements and seasons alternate with one another in succession.  Balance, as defined by Tao, is not stasis but a dynamic process of many overlapping alternations; even if some phases seem wildly excessive, they are balanced by others.

Everything has its place.  Everything has its season.  As events turn, balance is to know what is here, what is coming and how to be in perfect harmony with it.  Then one attains a state of sublimity that cannot be challenged.

Happiness is Hiking a day on the PCT

Happiness is Hiking, A day on the PCT

pct-4In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks ~ John Muir

Originally posted March, 2018

It had been far too long since I’d been on the trail.  Having moved to the desert and started a new job, a combination of being busy, fires in the mountains and blazing heat kept me trapped in the valley.  This past weekend I finally broke out.  It has been almost a year since I left the Appalachian Trail and almost six months since I did any hiking.  I decided to head up to the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), specifically to Kennedy Meadows.  Most people know Kennedy Meadows from the movie Wild, Cheryl’s arrival at the General Store there is a fairly memorable scene.

pct-6It was a great drive up the mountains slipping out of the high desert at 3000 feet to climb up the Sierras to over 6000 feet.  I made a stop at the General Store and picked up a map of the area.  Heading over to the Kennedy Meadows Campground I parked and headed out on to the PCT.

pct-5It felt so good to be wearing my Merrill’s to have a little bit of weight on my back and my walking sticks in my hands.  It’s not the best time of year to hike this part of the Sierras, there’s no water in the streams, the landscape is pretty brown.  On the way up I drove through one of the recently burned out areas, it’s sad to see so many trees standing black.  But there were some plants flowering in the meadows and it was warm but not hot.

pct-1I did a short hike, it was only a four mile out and back and I hiked out at a really leisurely to the bridge crossing the dry southern fork of the Kern River.  A few things hit me right away on the trail.  First, it felt so good to be back on a trail, it felt like I was free again, that I didn’t have a job and responsibilities and all of the inanities that come with our work lives.  Recently I’d been thinking a lot how much faster time goes by when you are working, the get up, go to work, go home, go to bed, rinse and repeat of it all flies by far too fast.  But my two hours on the trail felt like two full days at work, it was wonderful.

pct-2I stopped by the bridge and had a snack, did battle with a hornet who really wanted some of my peanut butter and just enjoyed being in the mountains and in the quiet.  Just flat-out being happy in the moment.  The walk back I decided to pick up my pace and make some time heading back.  Stretching myself a little felt good, there were moments it almost felt like I was back in hiking form.  Of course the nap I needed once I got home showed me I wasn’t, but I laid down on the couch with a smile on face and dozed off for a time.  So my friends, get outside, do a couple of miles and have a happy day.  ~ Rev Kane

Beautiful Van Gosh quote

Tonight friends, images from my favorite painter, Vincent Van Gogh.  The reason I love his work is the combination of color and intensity.  You can almost feel madness in the lines and brush strokes in his paintings.  I’ve only ever been fortunate enough to see prints and images, but on my life list is a desire to visit the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam, that will be a very happy day friends.  So  here are some images of my favorite works, have a look and have a happy day my friends ~ Rev Kane

Lighting the fire again

Lighting the fire again

Originally published September 21, 2020

It’s been a little over six months since we started our first lockdown related to COVID.  Over that time all of us have bounced through a range of changes, a range of emotions on our way to building to a place that we can loosely refer to as a new normal.  Over this time we’ve all searched for various coping mechanisms and for ways to get what we need.  For instance, with gyms closed, I’ve had to find new ways to workout.  It’s meant buying some equipment for home and doing something that I never thought I would be, I’ve been running.   I would love to be back in the gym, I’d prefer to be walking up fake hills on the treadmill than to running any day.

However, I also have noticed some not great things about my new normal.  Initially I was working a huge number of hours, so at the end of the day I had no energy left.  This led to me falling into a really bad pattern.  Wrap up work each night about nine then fall into a chair and watch two hours of TV before I crashed.  I admit it’s nice at the end of the day to just be mindlessly entertained for a bit before sleeping.  However it has also meant that I have not been very productive with any of my personal projects and goals.  That has to change.

So I took a vacation day today to catch up on some personal projects that have been lagging.  And to get a list together of the projects I need to get back on top of again.  It’s time to come out of this malaise that COVID has led me into and get moving, get started again on my projects including my next book.

So today, I built a list of the projects I want to get going again.  I even put a little calendar together for myself so that I can keep my goals on pace.  Tomorrow we get rolling again.  I hope if you’ve been in a similar place you can start moving forward as well.  The things we’re dealing with in the world are with us for awhile, we can’t just hide in a shell, it’s time to embrace life again, albeit with some modifications.

Wear a mask, be careful, wash your hands, social distance and have a happy day my friends. ~ Rev Kane
