Time for a Happiness Day!

Time for a Happiness Day!

happiness, happiness day, be happy

Take a Happiness Day

Sanity and happiness are an impossible combination.Mark Twain

You are not a bad person, you’re not evil or lazy as long as you have tried and my friends we have all tried.  I know there are times when we feel like we are bad parents, bad sons and daughters, and bad siblings.  Throughout my life I have seen everyone try, now granted that trying has led to a wide variety of successes and failures.   If we are to be truly happy my friends, we need to forgive those whose trying on our behalf was not as successful as we would like or need.  Hoping of course that those who we have tried on behalf of will also forgive us our failures as well.

Since we have tried my friends, it is time to give ourselves a break, to give ourselves a happiness day.  Now this is not just a day off, we have all taken days off, I recently even had a week off, and we end up all too often spending those precious days doing errands and cleaning the house.  This is not a vacation day where we have itineraries and places to be, people to take care of and make sure they are having a good time.  This is a happiness day, a day free of the pressures and responsibilities, a day designed for simply one thing, to make us happy.

So call in to work, warn your family, make arrangements for child care and plan your day.  Plan this well in advance and create a day that will make you happy.  This could mean a day just sitting in the grass reading a book, it may mean a long hike, or a spa day.  Treat yourself to really good food and by all means don’t do anything responsible.  The point of it all is to make yourself happy and for one day forget your worries and just enjoy yourself.  Good luck my friends, and have a happiness day ~ Rev Kane

Happiness is feeling safe

Happiness is feeling safe

happiness safe

Happiness is a form of courage.  ~Holbrook Jackson

Written in Monterey 2/19/11

Happiness at some level is a luxury.  What do I mean by that?  Well it comes back to one of my favorite concepts of all-time, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.  The concept beautiful for its simplicity, basically the idea is that you have to meet your most basic needs before moving on to things that are optional, like happiness, environmentalism or spirituality.  Those things are secondary if your kids are hungry.  One of the most basic things that human beings need is to feel safe and it is the second level of the hierarchy.  So the question today is, do you feel safe?

If not, what is it in your world that threatens you?  Is it something you can change?  If you can, you should make it a priority, taking care of yourself and your well-being is one of the first steps to being happy.  Remember that the things that threaten you are not always physical threats and most likely are psychological in nature.  People who are overly critical or not responsive of your needs can be just as damaging to your feeling of safety.  In the end, feeling safe means you can feel comfortable to let your guard down both physically and psychologically.

What got me thinking about this today was that I was fortunate to wake up this morning at a hotel on the beach.  Laying there in my warm bed, listening to the waves I was hit with this incredibly feeling of safety, I haven’t been feeling very safe in my world lately and the feeling this morning was wonderful and inspired this post and the following poem, enjoy.

Safe  by Rev Kane                                                                                                                  2/19/11

I feel safe here
warm in my bed
sound of waves breaking on shore
regular as heartbeats
kissing the land

A reminder
the original safe place
warm
wet
well-fed
regular heartbeats
the meaning of safety
before words or language

Happiness & Selected Families

Happiness & Selected Families

family, selected family, happiness, burning man

A member of my selected family, the fabulous and powerful Oz!

Let us be grateful to people who make us happy, they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.  ~Marcel Proust

Although your personal happiness depends first and foremost on you, others can help you along your path to happiness.  This can be accomplished by consciously connecting with others who can help you on the path.  Now there are a myriad of people in our lives, friends, family, coworkers and all the people we run into on a daily basis.  Our initial expectation is that those who are closest to us are the people who are most responsible, after ourselves, for helping us move forward on the path to happiness.  Unfortunately this is often not the case and in fact, sometimes they are the very people who can inhibit us from moving farther down the path.  This is not a condemnation of those close to us, they have their own path to follow and their own mountains to climb.  Sometimes the process that they must undertake can make our own journey more difficult.  This is not to say you should become selfish and not assist them as best you can, in fact helping them can actually help you.  Helping others is something we have discussed before and this is a great opportunity to put those thoughts into action.

Selected Families

However, you should also not sacrifice yourself for the mistakes of others.  Your biological family was decided for you, but your friends, or as I like to call them your selected family was not.  In creating your selected family it is important to choose people who bring you positive energy, make you feel good about yourself but do so in an honest manner.  No one who always tells you only good things for fear of hurting your feelings is helping you.  The best friends are those who will support you and when need be, honestly and compassionately let you know when you’ve gone astray.

I also highly recommend that in your selected family that you have people who make you laugh, the importance of laughter in our lives is huge.  I think we all have made the mistake of including people in our circle of friends, or our selected family, who are consistently negative and bring us down.  Although it can be stressful, or cause a confrontation, it is important to work these negative forces out of our lives.  Any removal of negativity reasonably improves our situation and moves us down the path to happiness.

So in order to improve our happiness we need to have the appropriate people around us.  Our selected family should be composed of positive, honest and upbeat people who can make us laugh.  Those people who are negative, that for whatever reason you can’t remove from your life, need to have their impact minimized.  Interact with them as little as possible and on a regular schedule so you know when the interactions will happen and limit the interactions to only necessary discussions.  For those you have to remove from your life, do so as quietly and compassionately as you can, but make the break quickly and fully.  If you leave them in your life at any level the negativity can creep back in.  Follow these steps and I promise you happier days my friends. ~ Rev Kane

What’s on my mind

It’s another Sunday and I’m at my computer thinking about what I want to write about this week.  There are a lot of things on my mind including the marches yesterday by high school students and how they were received.  I find it disheartening that adults are so quick to slam students trying to make their world better.  Particularly when these adults are a mix of the students who did the same in the 60’s or the children of those protestors.  It seems that we never learn the lessons from history that we should.

The next chapter of my life

But what is most on my mind today is the end of the current chapter of my life.  I’m a little over three months out from the next chapter in my life and that is weighing heavily on me.  Mostly because there is so much to get done, so much that is up in the air and that all makes me to busy to be mindful at all and do the things I really care about.  I tell myself that’s ok because in three months I get to immerse myself in my true passion and my true existence.  But that’s me employing one of human beings’ superpowers, rationalization.  Yes, I have a little over 60 workdays left, I need to work on my Spanish language skills, I have to wrap up my living situation, I have untold number of reservations and logistics to take care of, books to work on, social media work to do blah, blah, blah…

Being more mindful

So today I’m resolving to do a better job of being more mindful of making sure I’m not deferring my happiness too much.  That may seem a bit silly given what I’m about to embark on but I think it’s an important philosophy, never take what you currently have available for granted and that includes opportunities to do what makes you happy.  So next weekend I’ll be writing about a hike, it’s been far too long since I’ve hit a trail and although I’ve been good and in the gym, it’s time for some ecotherapy.

So my reminder for you tonight my friends is to not put things off, make that phone call, take that trip, and do that little thing that will make you happy.  And as always have a happy day my friends. ~ Rev Kane

Happiness and Massage

Happiness and Massage

Happiness lies, first of all, in health ~ George William Curtis

Happiness and Massage

We all have heard the sentiment that if you don’t have your health you don’t have anything.  Many of us address this idea when we have some sort of acute illness, when we feel badly.  However, like anything else prevention and maintenance are the best way to keep from feeling badly.  This means something none of us want to hear, regular exercise.  It means eating well and it means caring for our bodies.

Several years ago when I took a new position and started making more money than I had ever made before I did what any of us would do and decided to spoil myself a bit.  Now some people buy expensive cars or clothes but me, I decided I would get regular massage.  This sounds easy but in fact it can be incredibly difficult to find a dependable and talented masseuse.  In that search I wandered through all manner of interesting experiences, types of massage and downright weirdness.  I experienced the angry masseuse, the masseuse who thinks it’s all about how much pain she can inflict, the “isn’t this Taos” massage experience, and the walk on your back massage.  The weirdest by far was one near Halloween who hid behind her door and jumped out and scared me laughing hysterically, not exactly relaxing.

I have been fortunate enough to finally find a really wonderful therapist.  She does an amazing deep-tissue massage, is professional, knowledgeable, spiritual and has a great personality.  She’s become more than my massage therapist she’s become a friend.  As a result I get a massage every two weeks and I feel wonderful.

Massage has a range of benefits; here is a link to a piece that will lay them out for you.  http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/massage/SA00082 One additional benefit to having a regular massage therapist for a pale white guy like me, especially with a family history of skin cancer, is that they can alert you to moles that don’t look quite right.

At the end of the day there is nothing better than that wet noodle, relaxed feeling after a great massage.  So go get a massage, and have a happy and relaxing day my friends ~ Rev Kane

Happiness, asking for what you really want

Happiness, asking for what you really want

happiness, be happy, what you need

Happiness is asking what you need

There are two things to aim at in life:  first, to get what you want; and after that, to enjoy it.  Only the wisest of mankind achieve the second.  ~Logan Pearsall Smith

Recently I saw a post on Facebook where a person was both thanking their friends and also pointing out how Facebook shows who really cares.  This person was upset because while they had been going through a tough time they had asked their friends for prayers.  They decided that the people who responded to the post were the people who really cared about them while those who didn’t respond obviously didn’t care as much.

This post really got me thinking, the person had asked people to pray for their family.  Now it’s not a far out thought that someone could have seen the post and actually prayed for this person’s family which was exactly what this person had asked for in their original posting.  But was that in fact what they wanted?   I would venture it wasn’t given the nature of their second post.  You see, whether they had consciously processed this or not, prayers were in fact not what they wanted.  What this person wanted was acknowledgment from their friends that they cared, a kind of electronic hug.  This person was angry with people who didn’t provide that, people who didn’t provide something they had not been asked to give.

Asking for what you want

This whole situation echoes something that happens in all of our lives.  We often find that people are upset with us, or we’re upset with them, because they did not give us what we wanted from them.  What we should do in those situations is take a moment and really examine what we asked for, were we clear?  Did we ask for exactly what we wanted or were hoping others would intuit what wanted from them?  I know at times, particular with those closest to us, that we hope people will just understand what we need, no matter how well they know you, they rarely can.  Life is so much simpler, so much easier and happier if we ask for what we truly need from others.

So today, let’s make an effort to be clear, to ask for what we really want so we can all have a happier day my friends ~ Rev Kane

Happiness and your Brain!

Love your brain

No, this isn’t a post about brain science and happiness in fact it’s a post to highlight a story I heard today on Radiolab which is a really amazing radio show.  If you’ve never listened to Radiolab you really have to check it out, it is part National Public Radio, part Science Friday, part This American Life.  Today on Radiolab the show focused on what they called, When Brains Attack! a show about when people’s brains work against them in odd ways.  One of the stories was about a man named Kohn and it is one of the most touching stories you’ll ever hear, enjoy and have a happy day my friends.

Below is the link to When Brains Attack and Kohn’s story starts at the 26:10 mark, check it out:  http://www.radiolab.org/2012/jun/22/

Happiness is Natalie Portman: Annihilation

Happiness is Natalie Portman: Annihilation

natalie portman, happiness, celebrity

Natalie Portman

I’m going to college.  I don’t care if it ruins my career.  I’d rather be smart than a movie star. ~ Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman

I’ve been a fan of Natalie Portman for a very long time.  I thought she was outstanding in the professional at the young age of 13.  She of course most famously starred in the early Star Wars films while in high school and in the middle of those films she enrolled at Harvard.  She’s obviously talented, obviously beautiful and if you know anything about her, obviously brilliant.  I’ve often joked that given how amazing she is we are obviously destined to be together, that joke of course ended on a day when I drove into Big Sur after spending three days at a silent retreat only to find a bit too much traffic.  When I asked around I found out I had driven into town on the day of her wedding, a lovely little coincidence.

Annihilation

So it was with a bit of a grin when sitting through her most recent film Annihilation that I came to realize her character was married to a man named Kane in the film.  But what I really want to talk about tonight is the film Annihilation.  Ms. Portman  was excellent in the film, but I really want to talk about this film as it is the best “pure” science fiction film I’ve seen since Arrival.  Now what do I mean by a “pure” science fiction film?  I mean a film that relies on the underlying science and the cerebral aspects of the film rather than aliens, monsters, space crafts or explosions.  Not that I feel including any of these rules it out, and not that I don’t love films with those in them, but they are not the focus in a “pure” science fiction film.  Annihilation has its monsters and explosions, but the focus of the story is a purely scientific question, what is life?

I don’t want to go much further in talking about the story, but it’s a great story.  The thing is the story caught me a little bit by surprise.  There’s a mystery to be solved and it’s during the investigation of this mystery where a really amazing concept, underlying the question of what is life, is revealed.

An audio and visual trip

One of the things I believe is that this film should absolutely be nominated next year for an Oscar for score, sound design and cinematography.  Although visual effects may be the more appropriate category.  I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a film where I was so captivated by the visual and audio landscape of the film.  Even the visuals of the final credits are absolutely amazing and will lead me to going to see this film again.

Now if your type of science fiction is a Transformers movie, or anything with Michael Bay-like effects and explosions.  If Arrival bored you to tears, stay away from Annihilation, there won’t be enough here to keep your attention other than the visual and audio landscape.  However, if you like your science fiction to be thoughtful, deep and leave you wondering and thinking hours after you have left the theater, than check this film out.

A Big Screen Movies

I love going to the movies, I always have, I love the experience of sitting in the dark, big sound and a large screen.  I love the ability to be able to be totally immersed in the film experience.  But in recent years I rarely go anymore and when I do, I pick matinees and wait for a film to be out for some time so there will be smaller crowds.  Suddenly listening to someone else’s cellphone or conversation or the constant, “what did he say?” absolutely drives me nuts and absolutely ruins the experience for me.  People seem to be far too used to watching movies at home and have lost the polite boundary that should exist in a theater.

Because of this, I typically only go to what I call big screen movies.  These are films that have heavily visual and audio landscapes, films that I feel will likely lose something when they transition to the small screen.  I was lucky when I went to see this film, I happened upon a brand new theater, with reclining lounge chairs, and only 6 people in the theater.  That definitely made the experience a bit more interesting.

I’d love to hear what you think about the film but of course you’re always free to just enjoy what I wrote.  Have a happy day my friends. ~ Rev Kane
