Be happy

Be kind whenever possible, it is always possible ~ Dalai Lama

Sitting down tonight to write my Sunday night post and what’s really on my mind is Monday morning.  Work has been nuts for the last month, I’m working late one to two nights a week, I’m working six days a week.  This is not my normal mode of operation, at least it hasn’t been in a very long time since I began focusing on keeping my work and non-work life in better balance.  But we all have those times where circumstances and deadlines overrule the way things should be.  As long as this is a temporary situation, and mine should be, it’s ok.  It’s when this becomes the status quo that you absolutely need to make a change in your life.

So I’m not looking forward to the morning or this week, another very busy week, hopefully the last hectic week for a time.  However, instead of looking grudgingly at the morning, I’ve decided to think about kindness tonight.  I’ve written on kindness many times on this site for a very simple reason.  One of the best ways to make yourself happier is by doing something to make others happier.

On our campus we have recently begun a food pantry for students who are having issues with having enough to eat.  It’s an issue that hits close to home, there were a couple of times, happily only a couple, when as a kid I was in that situation.  Those times made a deep mark on me.  So on Friday a colleague and I got to go food shopping, spending $300 of some state funds earmarked for the purpose.  It felt good to helping out and I will be shopping once again after the holiday supplies run low on my own dime to keep the project going.  I tell you this not to brag or look good, but to remind you that there are ways in which all of us can help, however small, anything you can do matters as long as you are extending a kindness and that kindness will always mak it a happy day my friends. ~ Rev Kane

The Holidays are Coming Stay Positive

The Holidays are Coming Stay Positive

01
Holidays in general breed unrealistic expectations. The minute you start wondering, ‘is it going to be wonderful enough?,’ it never will be.                       ~ Pepper Schwartz

The holidays are coming, well, in fact, they are already here.  I don’t really count Thanksgiving because it is my favorite holiday of the year and to me, because of that it stands on its own.  But the season is upon us, whether it is Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Years Eve, Saturnalia,  Boxing Day or the Fiesta of our Lady of Guadalupe.

To be honest I don’t like this time of year, for me it’s a mix of a lot of things.  Short days, cold nights, bad weather and Christmas.  In general I really am not fond of Christmas, as a child I don’t remember many good ones.  But you know, in America you are supposed to LOVE Christmas, you’re supposed to want to hear Christmas Carols 24 hours a day, visits to relatives houses, you’re supposed to wear stupid hats and ugly sweaters.

01For me, for a lot of years, the holidays were the most depressing time of the year for me.  I would spiral, isolate myself and generally just be miserable.  The one high point for me has always been giving gifts.  I love finding a meaningful gift that shows the people I care about that I know them and know what makes them happy.  I especially love doing this for my nieces and nephews.  This year there has been a new fun little wrinkle, my sister has enlisted me to help out with her Elf on the Shelf so my niece and nephew got a surprise this morning, their elves had gone west.

01So over the next week I’ll be playing along while the elves are on their west coast vacation.  A little something for my nieces and nephews and more than just a bit for their Uncle Mike as well, to make all of our holidays a little more fun.

I’ll be starting my annual Holiday Happiness posts this week to try to make everyone’s holidays a little happy and help you have some happy days my friends. ~ Rev Kane

Appalachian Trail (AT) Happiness – Walking in the Rain

Appalachian Trail (AT) Happiness – Walking in the Rain

Happiness

Rev Kane, selfie in the rain

Life is full of beauty. Notice it. Notice the bumble bee, the small child, and the smiling faces. Smell the rain, and feel the wind. Live your life to the fullest potential, and fight for your dreams. ~ Ashley Smith

So friends I find myself once again in the Armstrong Redwood Reserve to do a couple of days of training hikes. California also happily finds itself being hit by a series of pacific storms dropping significant rain. So as I laid down last night to sleep and the rain began to beat on the roof I wasn’t surprised, nor was I upset. In the morning the rain had not let up, in fact it was heavier and more steady than it had been the night before.

The nice thing is that this would be the first opportunity I’ve had to test out my rain gear. So I geared up, heavier undershirt, lightweight rain coat, cycling rain gloves with my silk liners, my new rain skirt and my Merrell cross-trainers.

As if the universe wanted to join in, as I pulled into the parking lot the rain cranked up like a fire hose, if you’re going to test your gear, you may as well test it full on.

The beginning of a hike in the rain is never comfortable for me, I’m always a bit grouchy, I’m worrying about my gear, my footing, basically I’m stressing out and expecting the worst. However the true beauty of hiking is that as you walk stress falls away. The rain hits you but it’s ok, you don’t fall on your ass as soon as you hit the first slope, you start focusing on the hike. All the little things that eat up your brain when you are walking; picking the right spots to step and trying to stay out of the streams of water running down the hill,  evaluating your handholds on your trekking poles, getting the hood of the rain jacket appropriately placed on your head, and remembering to focus on your breathing.

Rivers forming on the trail

The focus is particularly strong in the rain and the world grows closer.
In the rain, with a hood up, the rain beating on your head sound is deadened a bit, your vision is slightly restricted and things get close and quiet, you’re more focused on the details of the hike. I like this and particularly in a dark redwood forest the closeness leads to a feeling of peace.

So today was a peaceful day, my hands were soaked through, my body was soaked, sweat and humidity more than rain. My Morrell Moabs were exactly as billed, completely useless at keeping your feet dry, but tonight we’ll see if they dry out quickly also as advertised. The rain coat did its job and I LOVE my rain skirt!!! I hate rain pants, a pain to get on over your boots or worse, you have to take your boots off to put them on. The swish-swish noise of rain pants kind of drives me nuts, so when I read about a rain skirt I had to give it a try. It’s perfect, easy on and off, keeps the rain off of your legs, extremely light, packs up tiny, velcroes down the side which even makes rest stops easy to deal with. Hell, if need be it could serve as an impromptu rain tarp, love, love, love it.

So today the most beautiful thing I saw was a waterfall, I’d walked this path a number of times and always wondered why there was a walkway off to one side. Today I learned why, there is a lovely little waterfall just off the trail.

100_1798What made me happy today was just being free and walking in the in the rain without a care.

What I learned today, was the beginning of the understanding of what spring on the AT is going to be like, particularly as I sit here drying my gear, a luxury I won’t have most nights on the trail.

Day 2

So my second day was a mess (at least my shoes had dried out), started out with the intent of testing my new video camera, battery was dead. This stressed me out way more than it should have, also, although no aches and pains it was one of those days when you just don’t have it. So I was grouchy and bitching under my breath and feeling overly tired and I came quickly to a little bit of reality, I was being an idiot.

So I stopped, took a break on a climb and took about 2 minutes to just do a very simple meditation. Just to focus on my breathing, really simple, stop, breathe, let it flow in and out and after a couple of minutes I felt better. So I powered through and did the hike, was happy to have put in the miles, even in the downpour that was the last couple of miles. Once I got my head right it was a really wonderful and peaceful walk in the fog, the clouds and the rain.

What was the most beautiful thing I saw today? It was an old couple, a really old man and his really old dog, out for a walk. They both looked over and kind of smiled at me as they hobbled along together. They looked like they’d been together a very long time.

What I learned today was more of a reminder than something new, just remembering to breathe, to keep working toward getting into the flow of this journey I’m currently on.

What made me happy, was the most beautiful thing I saw today, the dog and the old man, out walking in the rain really touched my heart and left me smiling for quite a while today.

I topped the day off with a long, hot bath, I leave the mountains in the morning and head for two nights on the ocean, falling asleep to the sounds of waves outside my door. Today was a wonderful day and I hope you had a happy day as well my friends ~ Rev Kane

My Annual Thanksgiving Day Hike

My Annual Thanksgiving Day Hike

hiking, PCT, holiday

The PCT north of Walker Pass

After a day’s walk, everything has twice its usual value.G.M. Trevelyan

Each year for Thanksgiving I do a hike in the morning, turkey in the afternoon.  My Thanksgiving tradition includes three of my favorite things, hiking, cooking and eating.  So this year I did twelve miles on the PCT heading north out of Walker Pass and then to steal from Arlo Guthrie, ate a Thanksgiving meal that couldn’t be beat.

The thing that I really love about this annual hike is the same thing I love about hiking in general.  The ability to get out, stretch myself physically, to get out of my head for a few hours.  The absolute joy of sitting on the side of a mountain experiencing natural quiet, the chance meeting of a couple of hikers.  Mountain therapy as I call it, is a really magnificent tonic.

So here’s a few photos from my hike, I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving  my friends, I’m grateful for all of your support.  ~ Rev Kane

Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings. ~ William Arthur Ward

I write about my love for Thanksgiving every year, I’ve talked about how as a child holidays were always the worst time of the year, but somehow Thanksgiving escaped the drama surrounding the rest of the season.  I’ll post my older posts at the end and I don’t feel the need tonight to reiterate what I’ve already written.  Tonight I want to just be thankful for my life.  Very little has ever been handed to me and I’m proud of where I am in life.  I’m in a place where I can do the things that bring me joy by leaving my job every few years and going off on adventures.  I make enough money to be comfortable and to help others.  It wasn’t always like this in my life and really has only been like this for the last five or six years but I’m thankful I’ve finally reached this point in life.  It demonstrates that hard work and education can take you very far indeed.

So today, I want to just recant some of the really positive things that just happened today that remind me how fortunate I am and how grateful I should be.  So today, two colleagues did a gender reveal for the child that is coming in March.  Great on its own, but it also meant I got a delicious little cupcake with some blue filling.

Also today, two friends who I met through a writing group, who also met each other through that group have fallen in love long-distance.  Not just that, they got engaged today, a very happy Thanksgiving indeed!  And hope for those of us out here who haven’t been as fortunate.

Finally, I got a package and a letter today from my littlest niece, at five years old this is likely the first letter she’s ever written herself.  In the package she also shared some of her Halloween candy with me and sent me a spider.  It was a wonderful gift to get.

My oldest sister’s kids

These three positive events just go to show there is good, there are things to be grateful about every day.

Tomorrow morning I’ll be up early and be on the trail, my Thanksgiving tradition since my days in Tennessee when I used to hike Chimney Top in the Smoky Mountains each year.  This year it will be Walker Pass on the PCT, heading north for Owens Peak.  A chance to stretch my legs, get in my head, and forget the world for a bit, good ole mountain therapy.

A Restful Sunday Night

A Restful Sunday Night

Conference nicely featured my book Appalachian Trail Happiness during my talk

Hello my friends, it’s been a busy few weeks and I’ve been traveling constantly.  Whether it has back east for a surprise birthday party, a conference, a training, a meeting or another conference.  This past weekend I had the privilege of doing one of the keynote addresses at the California Business Educators Association conference and as I show above they did a nice job of featuring my book Appalachian Trail Happiness.  I’m traveling again next week so I’m pretty worn out out tonight as I sit down to do my normal Sunday night post.  So I decided tonight that I’d go a bit easy on myself and just drop in some of my favorite previous posts.

The write up in the CBEA program

At the conference my talk was about maintaining life and work balance, about making sure you practice self-care.  So tonight I’ll hope you forgive me practicing what I preach by taking the easy road and as always, have a happy day my friends.  ~ Rev Kane

A Smile to Remember

we had goldfish and they circled around and around
in the bowl on the table near the heavy drapes
covering the picture window and
my mother, always smiling, wanting us all
to be happy, told me, ‘be happy Henry!’
and she was right: it’s better to be happy if you
can
but my father continued to beat her and me several times a week while
raging inside his 6-foot-two frame because he couldn’t
understand what was attacking him from within.

my mother, poor fish,
wanting to be happy, beaten two or three times a
week, telling me to be happy: ‘Henry, smile!
why don’t you ever smile?’

and then she would smile, to show me how, and it was the
saddest smile I ever saw

one day the goldfish died, all five of them,
they floated on the water, on their sides, their
eyes still open,
and when my father got home he threw them to the cat
there on the kitchen floor and we watched as my mother
smiled

Alone with Everybody

the flesh covers the bone
and they put a mind
in there and
sometimes a soul,
and the women break
vases against the walls
and the men drink too
much
and nobody finds the
one
but keep
looking
crawling in and out
of beds.
flesh covers
the bone and the
flesh searches
for more than
flesh.

there’s no chance
at all:
we are all trapped
by a singular
fate.

nobody ever finds
the one.

the city dumps fill
the junkyards fill
the madhouses fill
the hospitals fill
the graveyards fill

nothing else
fills.

Be Kind

we are always asked
to understand the other person’s
viewpoint
no matter how
out-dated
foolish or
obnoxious.

one is asked
to view
their total error
their life-waste
with
kindliness,
especially if they are
aged.

but age is the total of
our doing.
they have aged
badly
because they have
lived
out of focus,
they have refused to
see.

not their fault?

whose fault?
mine?

I am asked to hide
my viewpoint
from them
for fear of their
fear.

age is no crime

but the shame
of a deliberately
wasted
life

among so many
deliberately
wasted
lives

is.

Happiness is Eating Healthy

Happiness is Eating Healthy

One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well ~ Virginia Woolf

veggies

Hello my friends, so a new year has started and many of us have resolved to make some changes in the coming new year.  We are addressing each of top ten resolutions and hopefully helping you be more successful.  Tonight, we talk about a very popular resolution, eating better in the new year.

For me happiness really is food and I carry the extra weight to prove it.  The thing is when you are overweight people automatically assume you eat poorly, with me that is not true.  I eat healthily; I just eat way too much healthy food and am working personally to eat more reasonably this year.  When we talk about eating healthy you can address this in a lot of ways; we could talk about low-fat or low-carb, cutting calories, eating less processed food or even going meatless.  However I think this discussion can be addressed in another way that allows us to eat in a much more interesting fashion as well as eating more healthily.

I’m fortunate to live in California where we have multiple growing seasons and as such can get good, fresh food year round.  Even now in January I have lettuce, broccoli, spinach, radishes, carrots and cabbage growing in my outdoor garden.  So I do understand some of the recommendations I will make are easier to achieve in some places than others.

The two goals I have been pursuing over the last year and the recommendations I would make to you to eat more healthily would be to eat more locally and more seasonally.  Eating more locally doesn’t mean you can’t ever eat a banana, I think one of the upsides of globalization is that even in Maine, you can get a banana year-round.  Militancy is never a good solution, not even when it comes to diet.  Eating locally means to focus on what can be found locally, going to the farmer’s market instead of the grocery store and perusing what’s available and even better shopping at those roadside farm stands.  Find a local butcher who specializes in local meats, you will be surprised how many are actually out there and how affordable there meat often is, and even if it’s a little pricey it’s worth it for the peace of mind you get knowing it’s fresh.  Better yet have friends who hunt and fish, do some of that yourself or trade them for some of their local meat and fish.  There are a lot of benefits to eating locally, for me it really comes down to fresher, better tasting food that also supports my local economy.

Eating seasonally sounds like a giant pain in the butt.  However eating seasonally turns out to be a lot easier than you think, as well as being a heck of a lot fun.  Again, moderation is the key; I’m not suggesting you eat nothing but root vegetables and meat in Minnesota this winter.  However taking a look at local farms and see what they are doing, I know some farms have starting expanding their growing seasons with hoop houses and greenhouses, meaning you can get seasonal vegetables for a much larger part of the year than in the past.  One of the best examples I can give you as to how to do this comes from a friend I’ve made over the last couple of years.  Joanne Neft has written a cookbook with a chef that provides recipes for eating locally and seasonally.  Essentially, she attended the farmer’s market each week year round and created recipes based on what was available that week.  The cookbook, Placer County Real Food is amazing and the recipes are fantastic.  Think how much fun you could have doing a similar exercise each week where you live.  A great way to eat and a great way to have a happy day my friends        ~ Rev Kane

So tonight, first a little bit of loveliness from a friend.  Recently my friend Kurt sent me the YouTube video put together by his father and some friends.  A beautiful combination of music and photography.  A little bit of sensory happiness.  In addition a series of really amazing nature photos I found online.
